How Important is Orgins?

as a future game publisher, how important is Orgins for getting the hype out about your game? Won't many other companies be doing the same thing? How many people will even bother looking because of whatever reason they are going there for?

I am curious to if anybody has experience with such huge events and this event in particular.

Look at it like this. The attendance level for 2004 was reported at 13,980 almost every one of those people will visit the dealers room at least once. So for you $450 you have a chance of selling a game or giving out literature to each of them. Not bad advertising. The people who attend Cons are the most hard core players and will bring $BIG$ to spend on new games. There are also hundreds of industry people to make contact with including distributors.

oh I thought attendence was typically around 20,000 but that is still a good thing. If it was just $460 there would be no question, but As I don't live in Columbus, there are hotel costs and airplances, food, etc...

But I think it is of great importance to go, so I probably will.

I have heard of game companies that share a booth to lower costs (may help you cover costs of hotel, travel, etc.).

***That is a good idea. If you join the GPA (Game Publisher's Association) they often have a co-op program whenre they show their member's goods and help sell it (with or without you) for a fee.

But I would say Origins is one of the 3 cons you should attend. Gencon Indy and GTS being the others. Exceptions would be if you lack some funds and can attend a larger regional con, like Kublacon in San Francisco, or Genghiscon in Denver.

But I highly recommend Origins.

Ways to make it worthwhile: runs demos in your booth and in the board game hall (or in the hall that matches whatever it is your game ends up being).

Booth demos will require space. You can do it with one booth - have one sales table and one demo table. But demo, demo, demo.

Your next bet is GTS or GAMA Trade Show. This is not a consumer show but one where only retailers and distributors attend. Best way to get the hook-up and the word out. This is in Vegas, www.gama.org.

Good luck.

The way it looks right now is that I will be attending the last 2 days of the GAMA Trade Show because I am still in college for one more semester.

Will be attending Orgins, but doing tons of demos might be difficult as only myself and my wife will be attending that.

In addition to that, I think I would be going to GenCon SoCal, as it is a con that I can drive to, which will save tons of money by not having to fly.

this is the current state of plans. Maybe I can get some people thta I know to go to Orgins if they would only have to pay for a plane ticket and food.

*******And will you be pushing your product? Will you be giving away flyers, postcards, sample games? Or are you just looking around?

Will be attending Orgins, but doing tons of demos might be difficult as only myself and my wife will be attending that.

***Again, what will you be doing there to push your product? It's hard to walk around and sell your stuff though I've seen it happen - but it is not effective.

***That is fine - though it's still growing (or not).
