Hi, my name is Tom, and I’m a board game design addict. (I just have a really lazy addiction, becoming inspired about once a decade or so.) I self-published Prince of Chaos back in 2008, which was an educational experience that taught me more what not to do than anything else. I’m still suffering from PTSD in some ways. Only an idiot would return to try it again.

Hi, my name is Tom, and I’m an idiot.

But alas, we must all follow our muse down whatever rabbit hole (or off whatever cliff) she leads us. So here I am, freshly inspired, doing the same thing again but hoping for a different outcome (insert definition of insanity here).

Actually, this time I’m hoping to entice brilliant, savvy (and generous) established publishers to consider my games – one of which I am absolutely certain will be a tremendous hit! How can I know this? Because my WIFE likes the game! Seriously, that’s huge. You have no idea. And, it uses DICE! Hell, I HATE dice! I refused to let them come near Prince of Chaos, and vowed to never, ever, ever design a game which used dice. Yeah.

Damn you muse!

In playtesting, my wife already proved her superior dice-rolling prowess by rolling doubles 11 times to my 2 in one game! (I still beat her. Bwahahaha!) Okay, she beat me the very next game. But not because of better dice rolling! (Not sure I should be proud of that.)

Anyway, I hope to help others and get help in return on these forums.

Thank you for your support.

Welcome to the forums, Tom.

Welcome to the forums, Tom. Do you have rules sheets or gameplay examples of your dice game?

I do. (Though everything is still in MS Word draft form.) Still new to the forums here, so any advice on where to get started posting things for feedback would be welcome. Thanks!

Welcome! Congrats on the wife

Welcome!

Congrats on the wife enjoying it. I can sympathize with you. I've been working on a geeky dungeon crawler for a few years now. Last year at Dragon*Con my wife asked the panelists at a game design talk how their wives handle playtesting their games.

Hi Paul. So, what was the result? Did most of the other wives tolerate playtesting well; or do many roll their eyes and groan when asked to play games outside their comfort zone? My wife greets every new idea with reluctance and skepticism, though is supportive and a reasonably good sport. She just hopes "other people" like my games. My latest seems to be the exception to the rule.

If I remember correctly, most

If I remember correctly, most had a small group of dedicated friends/co-developers that helped with early playtests.

My wife sounds a lot like yours. As this is my first game, and not her style at all, she continues to be skeptical even as she helps me run through it time to time.
