Hey there, my name is Amanda and I've sort of lurked off-and-on for awhile. Usually any questions I had were addressed by others so I never really felt that I needed to sign up. But now that I've finished my first game (and am running an Indiegogo campaign to fund the art and manufacture) I figured it was time.

I would love if people could give me feedback on the campaign, or share it with friends as it's been live for almost a full week and is progressing rather slowly. The more people who know about it the better, right?

So check it out: http://www.igg.me/at/storybuilder

I looked at your project and was surprised that you have budgeted $25,000 for the art. How many pieces of art are required?

Are you surprised because that seems too much or too little?

There are 180 cards, with 127 unique images across the cards, plus the card backs and game box, and 12 aspects (small images denoting card types). Then there is the 15 card expansion pack. The artist who created the concept art (that can be 'bought' at some of the pledge levels) gave me an original estimate of $30,000 minimum so I thought I was doing pretty good to find artists willing to stick to a lower budget (and I did interview artists who weren't willing to work with that lower amount).

Depending on the artist, I have worked with a professional that worked for both Marvel Comics and DC Comics (he is also well known for doing storyboards for movies - he is currently working on the next X-Men movie) and we roughed out about 70 pieces of artwork for $5000. So that's approximately $75 per piece of artwork (from rough sketches to fully colored Photoshop files). You should therefore be looking to pay around $13,500 for 180 pieces... You can figure out what it works out to be with the exact amount of artwork.

Don't forget that this was an Marvel Comics/DC Comics artist (well known and has a following of people who pay for his artwork)!

If you are doing a lot of artwork (like you are), you should be able to negotiate a better per piece rate such as perhaps $65.

But I think $25,000 is not too high a goal: you need to be able to PAY for rewards and EARN extra to pay for the artwork. So it's about 2x the price of the artwork. That means your artwork should cost about $12,500 (or less).

I think your projections are okay - provided that you took into account the 2x the kickstarter earning.

I do understand that artist must make a living and I don’t want to be dismissive of their value. The standard these days is quite high and you won’t get away with shoddy art. Form what I can see the artists you are working with are quite talented and deserve to be well paid.

Yet I’m thinking that it might be a bit too much. 127 Images is a lot but you’re also buying in bulk so I hope you were given a break on that front.

Cover art for example will cost you $500 of more. $196 per piece for small images seems steep. These costs must also be spread out over the print run. If you printing 10,000 copies which is huge for an indie game you have spent you have spent $2.50 on each copy. If you are using a standard marketing and distribution model you need a 500-600% markup so that $2.50 will add $15 to the MSRP of the game.

Obviously crowd funding the project will take much of the risk out of the equation but if you’re looking to run a business there is a limited number of people that will pay $50 for a card game.

Good Luck
