Hello all!

I've been signed up with and following discussions on bgdf for about 2 years. I didn't introduce myself immediately because I was in the middle of writing up the rules of an age of sail tactics game I had developed with my dad. I thought I'd finish the rules first...

...it can take a long time to write your first Rules, can't it!?

Anyway, it was a good thing that it took so long to write them, because it was during that time that I finally realised/ recognised/ accepted that the game was a 40 minute game that was always fun for only 20 minutes. I made big changes and now it's a 20 minute game that we usually want to play 2 or 3 times of an evening. So big improvement and important lessons learnt - not least of which, the issue of why it took me so long to face up to the problem in the first place!

My project now is a Muay Thai card game, since my wife and I both like card games...and Muay Thai. In the near future, I'd be very grateful for advice on this one as I feel like I'm probably spending a lot of time reinventing wheels...

For now, let me just thank you all for the interesting and informative content I have enjoyed so far.

Tim

Hey Tim,

I am also a reader of the forums and the webpage for a long time and I decided to post my progress very recently.

I am super impressed you accepted that your game is super fun at 20 min and you made the brave decision to trim it down.

It made me think about the boring parts of my games as well.

Looking forward to hearing more about your progress and your games.

Lets run together so that we may reach more than running by our own :)

Ciao

Hi Adam, and thanks for your generous offer of help. I will be delighted to take you up on it! I will try to put my current ideas into a readable (if not actually coherent) form soon.

Hi Ugur, Trimming the game

Hi Ugur,

Trimming the game was a fascinating experience. I almost felt like I was having one of these conversations with aspects of the game: "I love you darling and it hurts to let you go but your just not right for me now!"

Difficult decisions, but once made...a wonderful sense of liberation and excitement. All the more interesting to me personally since for a long time I had been trying to work out what I could ADD to the game to fix it! Noooo.....stripping it down was the way! It not only made it simpler, but also made it more strategically dynamic.

Anyway, I learnt a bit about game design and a lot about myself. By entering the final iteration into BGG's recent 2-player game contest, I also learnt that one can't take getting feedback for granted. So, I certainly plan to share thoughts and ideas for my new project here for just the reason you mentioned.

I hope I can get something postable together soon, and I look forward to sharing thoughts with you.

Cheers,
Tim

Argh! I'm struggling to get anywhere and need some advice please!

I'd like my Muay Thai game to fit these specs if possible:

1) Only cards
2) Can be played in a small area - aeroplane breakfast tray
3) Reflects the war of attrition nature of the sport - hacking away at each other essentially
4) But with a deceptive amount of strategy - managing your energy (bidding?), choosing your shots (rps dynamics), having a game plan (points win, knock out, TKO by cuts)
5) Reflects the theme...scoring concept, 5 rounds (I think an innovative score sheet design might be an important component)
6) you design your fighter - choose a range of cards, the sum of which define your fighter's style and attributes
7) Should have lots of scope for inventive strategy

The circles I have been going round in for a while have been along these lines: my attempts to avoid randomness have resulted in iterations that are either broken or tend to boil down to elaborate RPS, neither of which is satisfying at all.

I wonder if I could put the theme out there and beg for some brainstorming of ideas. Despite having thought about and experimented with this problem, I'm veryhappy to start from a blank slate.

ANY thoughts on potential mechanics for a game of this type would be gratefully received. Thank you!

interesting - welcome to the

interesting - welcome to the forum! I'm also working on a similar card game at the moment. Will be interesting to see how the execution varies in the end!

We're tweaking some aspects then will see about sharing the rules - may or may not be useful
