Need a new name for my game...maybe.

Hey all,

For the past few months, I've been working on a semi-cooperative/competitive treasure hunting/exploration game tentatively called "The Treasure of Nemo's Island".

Players have been shipwrecked on the island where Capatin Nemo retired from the world. Now, Nemo is long gone, but he left several of his accumulated treasures and inventions hidden around the island, include the Nautilus. Players can work together to gather supplies and equipment to repair the Nautilus and escape the island. At the same time, they can find clues and uncover the treasures and inventions that Nemo left behind. But, Nemo has left booby traps around the island, and if enough of them are set off, the volcano on the island erupts and the island sinks. Whomever escapes the island in the Nautilus with the most treasure wins.

So, the more I think about it, the title "The Treasure of Nemo's Island" seems cumbersome and too long. Not elegant. I'd really like to find a better title for the game as I move forward. Does anyone have any suggestions?

For starters

Nemo's Island
Nemo's Treasure
Nemo's Trove
After the Maelstrom
Nautilus Rising

Kinda like naming a band huh...one part don't overthink it, one part you'll just KNOW it when you hear it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the word "nemo" got hijacked by a fish a while back and any title with that name in it might make people think of that movie.

I like Nautilus Rising though.

Oh yeah

That is a fair point. Substitute Nemo with Dakkar lol.

Nemo is, unfortunately a moot point because of Disney.

However, the (fiction) man deserves respect; he was a Captain after all, so I'd make a small adjustment to WikkedWood's suggestion:

Captain Nemo's Treasure
Captain Nemo's Trove
The Secrets of Captain Nemo

A short snappy title is great, however a title which tells me something about the game is better, even if its longer:

"Last Night on Earth" for example hints at what the game is about.
"Smash Up" short and snappy but doesn't tell you anything about the game.

Not to be a ball-breaker, but I think "Smash-Up" is because the game offers a ludicrous combination of disparate themes - a Mash-Up, if you will. But hey, I'm all for discrediting Smash-Up in whatever way you see fit... I find mash-up themes altogether insufferable.

I'm looking at YOU Heroscape!

An Unconventional Expounding on the Significance of Titles

Yeah, I think this is the key point. The name should be informative, and preferably elicit the theme, if possible. A long, descriptive title can sometimes serve the purpose quite well:

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Nemo-approved)
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

I don't have a problem with "Nemo" sans "Captain" since your target audience is presumably those within "the hobby" (though the validity of this notion is subject for some debate). Being a generally intelligent lot, they will not make any dopey fish associations that can't be readily overcome.

Nemo's Bounty
Adventures on the Mysterious Island
Castaways on the Mysterious Island
The Curious Contraptions of the Exceptional Captain Nemo

I like the last one best because it's less in accord with conventional, modern board game titles, and evokes that air of mystery that we associate with the literature of the past. I'd sign off on Nautilus Rising, though.

What if it was "The Curious Contraptions of the Consummate Captain Nemo" to really keep the alliteration going?

You may have FURTHER trouble

You may have FURTHER trouble from Disney, as they are remaking/rebooting 20,000 leagues. Although I don't know that they will be putting a board game out for it :)

What about 20,000 Treasures from Under the Sea (20,000 treasures for short)? Makes the reference more clear even if you don't recognize the character's name, and also alludes to gameplay well.

My backup suggestion is "Robbing Nemo". Just for funsies :) Don't tell any lawyers.

It's in the public domain, so it shouldn't matter what Disney does. Just don't use images or artwork owned by Disney, and you're fine.

Call it ...

"Treasure Island" ... not named after the book or hotel of equal name (not to mention the Video Game either...)

Sounds the most appropriate and you can drop all the "Finding Nemo" stuff... And the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbapQZTQDGQ

Maybe I've traded one for another?!

Cheers Ed!

Note: It looks like the Book is in the Public Domain too...!

Update: My inspiration is SAYING <"Big Adventures At Treasure Island">!

Update 2: This could set up some BRANDING = "Big Adventures SERIES", Game #1 = "At Treasure Island"... Game #2 = "On Terra Prime" (Sci-Fi), etc. Just a thought...! LOL

Yep. I'm trying to steer clear of the more recent productions and just use the original books.

Thoughts,

Nemo Rising has a nice feel.

Nemo's Cove

The Secrets of Nemo's Cove

Nemo's island

Nemo's Ghosts

The name Nemo is fine as it relates to captain Nemo and so not an issue with Disney as you are not making a fish nemo game. Has been episodes where some litigation trigger happy lawyer tries it on but just stand firm and blog the matter every where.

I think you should call it

I think you should call it Farlong Island, there is no reason, I just think you should.

I think your game works well without Captain Nemo's name attached to it (and that of the Nautilus), I mean it was written too long ago for you to need to worry about copyrights and such, but I think your game is interesting enough that you don't need to ride in Nemo's wake, let the players have this sneaking suspicion about who the captain really is and then get some killer steampunk themed art and you've got a winner.

I see what you are saying, but having the island be Captain Nemo's really fires up the player's imaginations. It also affects the things found on the island, the locations, etc. But, I am considering going with a more steampunk version of Nemo.
