Game crafters alternative for war games?

I was wondering if there was other print on demand services that was similar to game crafters but more adapted for war games.

The main issue is that game crafters does not seem to have classic 5/8" chipboard tokens. They either have the 1/2" or the 3/4" punch board which are much more thicker.

For playing maps, the only foldable mat is the quad fold mat, or the big mat which can be OK.

Else, considering that the game would possibly be very flat( Mat, tokens and maybe a few cards) unless I supply dices, I was wondering if some POD services allowed shipping games in ziplock bags. That would greatly reduce the cost of the game as a box normally cost around 10$.

Completely Custom Chipboard Tokens

Hi Larienna,

The Game Crafter does not offer 1/2" or 3/4" standard punch board tokens but we do allow you to create custom tokens in whatever size/shape you need them. You can learn more about this at https://help.thegamecrafter.com/article/201-custom-punchouts.

This would allow you to create the size you want but you could even go so far as making the tokens in the shape of the unit(s) you are trying to represent. (tanks, airplane, cavalry, single soldier, etc..)

You are correct on the mats. You could also consider using a 6-fold game board although that is much pricier obviously. This would also not likely be big enough, but other game designers have put 2 or more of them together for larger game maps. Hope that helps!

The big mat seems foldable, so I could combine 2 mat together. considering I want multiple map layout, I want the thin mat to supply a lot of variety like "Wizard Kings". Still the size I really need depends on the size of the hex grid which depends on the size of the units.

You seem to have 1/2" and 3/4" square punch out, what you are lacking is the 5/8" punch out. I was looking for something in between.

Also, they are thick punch out, and very thin shards, but there is no chip board which is again in between both thickness.

So far, if using GC, I might use the thick 3/4" anyway, they would be easier to manipulate.

I just thought that since there are so many war games that use 5/8" chip board, that it would be the most common solution.

Sorry, there was a typo in our last message to you. It was supposed to read:

So basically you can create whatever size tokens you want using our Custom Punchouts feature. Everything is produced on 60pt thick chipboard. I do want to make sure you understand that the 1/2" and 3/4" punch board tokens you are referring to are the widths/diameters of the components and not the thicknesses of the chipboard. Hopefully that helps clear things up.

This is true.. they have 1/2" stuff

but not 5/8". I'd think you could manage to work with either 1/2 or 3/4 if you really need to..

As for the thicknesses, I think you're referring to the punchouts which are all 1.5mm (60pt) or the cardstock "shards"? And you want a very light chipboard, like a 0.5, like a cereal box?

Most punchouts in games are done on 1.5mm or 2.0mm.. maybe this is a "wargame" standard thing I just don't know about.

Right, shards are printed on cardstock. Is the the thing you're looking for the thickness of that cardboard I linked to on amazon? I haven't seen anyone printing on that (obviously you could contract with a factory for it, but I assume that's not what you're looking to do).

Approximately yes. But it's true that thicker is easier to manipulate, so I might use that instead. The only exception is if I use terrain modifiers hex, it would stand out too much from the map. I might use shards instead.

I now know what can and cannot be done. I'll try to focus on playtesting the game for now.

By the way, it's fun to know that blank cardboard is available. I could check if there have any at the dollar store. It would prevent me from using cereal boxes.

I literally started saving cereal boxes for my prototypes before searching amazon and coming up with a better solution :)

(I use 1.5mm for my own protos, though)
