Hey guys, been trolling these forums for the last couple weeks, thought I'd drop a line here. After getting into boardgames a couple years ago (started with Settlers then advanced quickly after that) I figured I'd try my hand at designing.

My concept is a miniatures warfare game (think 'Risk') combined with a deckbuilding mechanic (inspired by 'Dominion') where you build a deck to get powerful spells to make your army stronger and eventually kill your opponent (inspired by 'Mage Knight'). I'm still in the 'close friends' playtesting stage, and still make many tweaks to the rules after each session, so still a while to go. My goal is to make an easy to learn, semi-casual game that plays in about 45 minutes - 1 hour, but still has sufficient depth and variability for replay value.

Haven't quite got to prototyping yet but I'm foreseeing a lot of difficulty with getting art and miniatures. Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking forward to being a part of this community!

Welcome! (even if I also arrvied only today :D )

I'm really interested in miniature stuff, too! If you find a cheap way to produce them, let me know :)
(Thought about 3D printing...)

Best advice I can give is

Best advice I can give is don't worry about art and miniatures when you're prototyping. Use simple clip art or icons in your art placeholders and use meeples or miniatures/pawns from other games or something of the sort for your games miniatures while you are in the prototyping/play testing stage. If you plan on presenting the game to publishers, we will usually take care of those sorts of issues. If you plan on self-publishing, then research artists and manufacturing options once you reach the point of being ready to publish the finished product.
