Fun Stuff: Making Games with Kids

Hungry Jack - 1d6 Version
Kid's Game - Climby's Tree House

Today I brought some of my game-making supplies along on a visit with my family. I have two young twin nephews (age 6) and we sat down for a bit to make games together. Here are two of the results.

HUNGRY JACK

This is my nephew's version of the simple dice game Hungry Jack, which I had taught them on a previous visit. This version uses a single six-sided die, but it's otherwise a faithful rendition. Note that the number 4 spot is - in his words - the dead spot, and chips go there until the end of the game.

CLIMBY'S TREE HOUSE

This is the collection game I made and decorated, in honor of my nephew's stuffed toy sloth, Climby. In it, you move your way up the tree and if you land on a spot with a fruit, you have a chance to collect it. If you are in the tree house while others are still climbing, you can throw the die and if the result is an even number you can steal a fruit from another sloth to add to your collection. The winner is the player with the most fruits in two of three categories: apples, blueberries, and grapes.

Lucky Nephews

Sound's like they are lucky to have an Aunt or Uncle like you!!! Creativity is a blessing!!! I feel like there should be a much slower way to determine if the sloth gets to take fruit from the other sloths. Like you roll one dice in a cup, and turn it over...then you have to roll another dice as many times as it takes to get 2 sixes in a row before you can look under the cup and see if you have an even or odd die!!! hahahahahahahah Just to make it painfully slow!!!

Nothing says "fun game" like slow and painful!

Sloths

I read an article about sloths..... a zoologists put a bowl of water on their heads and the average sloth didn't spill any water for over 24 hours!!!!! Talk about slow and painful!!!

Slothful Movement

At the moment, players do one of two actions on their turn:
- Move: 1, 2, or 3 points in any direction.
- Collect: Throw a die and see if the result allows them to gain a fruit.

...I reckon things moved at just the right pace between "realistic sloth movement speed" and "fun." :)
