I thought of a fairly neat game that involves mining. The mechanics are quite unique, but I don't want to delve into them just yet. I want to do some more research on other games. Does anybody have knowledge of any mining related games? By mining, I mean mining for Gold, or other minerals, or gas, diamonds, etc. Even having their theme related to mining, I'd still like to study them.

I did a search on Boardgamegeek.com with the keyword "mining" and found a bunch and read about them. So I'm looking for games without 'mining' in the title (since that's what I searched for at BBG.com).

I don't think the originality of a theme is as important as how well the theme fits the gameplay and more importantly how original the gameplay or mechanics are. If you have a great game about mining that feels different than every other mining game and is fun, that's all that should really matter.

But, to answer your question, I think there's a game called Lost Valley that is about the Gold Rush and there are definitely several Gold Rush themed games.

Typically when I'm researching a game type on BGG and it's not covered by their "category" option, I'll brainstorm a list of terms that might appear in the title of such games.

gold, ore, rock, miner, mining, lode, dig, digger, rush, gems, jewels, prospector, claim, shovel, quarry, stone, shaft, treasure, earth, pit, nugget, vein,

stuff like that.

Then I do a Google search as well, in your case for "mining game" or "mining board game". Many hits for "mining game" pop up quickly, including several that have none of the terms from my list in their title.

So there's a ton out there. Hopefully other BGDF members can rattle off some names for you, but if not you shouldn't find it too hard to dig some up yourself.

get it? dig? MINING? DIG?

I try to use Geeklists on the BGG for this very purpose. I searched for "Dig," picked one (that I knew was fairly famous, Reinger Knizia's Digging), and then looked to see if it was on any appropriate GeekLists. Sure enough, there's a list called "Knowledge & Recreation: Mining": http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listid=785

Similar lists are attached to other games on that list, etc., forming a web of connections that should provide you with many more than just those with "mine" or "mining" in the title.

Two that come straight to mind are Boomtown (a very big seller) and a game called Mine! you can find both on boardgamegeek.
