I went to Origins last year _specifically_ to look at/play all the boardgames I could in the vendor area. From what I can tell, a lot of people do that at origins, and many of the game companies have _very_ small tables set up at which to play. this seemed to be well received by attendees, as most of the tables were not empty for very long.
Origins might be a special case though, since it is so big ...
