Press releases

Hi guys, I'm helping a friend who is the lead designer of a soon-to-be-released game, gather information about press releases. I have noticed that some gaming websites mention newly released games in their news section, but can't seem to find any info on how these sites get this info. We recognized the value of free publicity, and a small indie game company with limited rescources, needs a little help getting noticed in this market. BTW the game will be a fantasy RPG lite boardgame. Can anybody point us in the right direction? any little info would be immensly appreciated. :D

I'm no expert, but what I would do is send an individual email to each site about your game.

That's what I'm doin'. I guess I'm on the right track. Do you know of any good sites for fantasy game lovers, that post news articles on game releases?

Thinking harder, there's http://kenzerco.com/ of KODT fame!

There's always the good old search engines:

SJ Games' Pyramid Magazine prints press releases each week, you might also try ENWorld and RPG.net.

I'll second http://www.rpg.net and http://www.enworld.org as excellent places to release your news, based on your description.

ENWorld and RPGNow have already been mentioned. If you are planning on selling the game (I assume you are) then sign up for being a vendor on RPGNow. (Here's a link for their vendor information.)

The Gold Vendor level allows you to submit a press release of your product out to a list of interested parties maintained by RPGNow. Currently this list is over 300 e-mail addresses and covers individuals to companies.

Just my two pence.

I'd also recommend joining the Game Publishers Association... (www.GPA.org). They have a press exploder that will send your release to several dozen mags, sites, etc, all at once.
