I'm devloping a Card Game with a friend and during this process I have noted that while the game has been designed form the start to be a Collectable card game it really could be released as a non-ccg and not hurt it gameplay wise.

So I'm here developing the game not really sure if it should be CCG or a non-CCG Both having their pros and cons

such as

CCGs having a non static nature that is apealing but also the fact that the CCG market seems to have an over abundance of titles

where

non-CCG are less appealing to the Target Audience ( 16-30 CCG player types) (from what I've witinessed) but are easier to manage producing than a CCG.

so I guess that I'm just looking for other points of view on this matter, the question being to CCG or not to CGG

CCG vs Non-CCG

The big question is "Do I want to sell lots of product?"

If the goal is to make money, then full on CCG is the way to go. It's a proven model.

However, it's entirely possible to create a customizable game without emphisizing the collecting aspect of it. Simply make constructed decks. Players will be able to buy and play a single deck, and if they so choose, they can purchase all the decks and, in turn, have all the cards from which they can construct thier own.

I'm a big fan of non-randomness when buying game product. The buy-in for most CCGs right now is just not worht it to me.

I've thought a lot about this over the last two years as I've spent more and more time thinking about game design. For me, I realized that to do a CCG right would require FAR more time and playtesting than I have access to now (and for the foreseeable future). Thus, a CCG is out of the question for me. I can (and do) make CCG-like card games, where individual cards do individual and interesting things or combine to be greater than the sum of their parts. I also sometimes think about potential expansion sets while designing my card games (just in case one ever gets published and becomes popular!). But I definitely do not plan to design ~200 different cards and then try to build as many different decks with them as I can, looking for broken cards and balancing multiple strategies against each other. Personally, I like my day job, and I like seeing my kids at night. But if that wasn't bad enough, I wouldn't want to do that whole design process all over again four months later. I read somewhere that a CCG doesn't usually break even until it's second expansion. That's a heckuva lot of playtesting!

For what it's worth, that's my 2 cents. Adjust for inflation as you see fit.

It seems that the CCG market is VERY saturated right now, I'm not sure that an established CCG company (you know who you are) would look at an indy designer's CCG right now, and I doubt that many small shop publishers want to try to break in a new CCG.

To me, the question is HOW the game is enjoyed. A lot of CCG gamers enjoy the creation aspect of the game (searching for the right cards, tweaking their deck, etc.) more than the game itself. I playtested a CCG with a hard-core MTG player by handing her the deck then playing. She didn't enjoy it at all because to her, the game is about fine tuning your own experience.

A complete game-in-a-box is bought and played for the experience of the game since there is typically little to no expansion.

Also consider how much time you want to devote to developing expansion decks, new themes and booster cards. The idea with CCGs is to stay fresh, always have something new to sell.

Good luck with your game in whatever form it takes!

I feel Nanite's suggestion is a very good starting point in fact as I think about it more I belive that I will designe this game as a new type of card game an

Kind of like Zman's B-movie games or Steve Jackson's Chez Geek!
