Getting geographical/political maps

Hey all.
I have a few ideas for games in the back burner, but I was wondering; if you needed a map of a specific region where would you search? The areas I am thinking about are:

  • China (during the dinasties, no specific years)
  • The medateranian centered on italy (dark ages/medieval)

The general idea is to use a map for a game board (some tweaking may need to be done), and then if it ever goes any where have someone with mad graphics skills to do them up right.

An thoughts on locating stuff like this? I've dug around a bit, but many maps are just plan hard to read, or don't unclude any details.

Thanks all...[/]

Not sure about the details you want/need but with a quick google, I found

If nothing else you can see a map that you can start from.....

I've had pretty good success just doing Google image searches to obtain maps. I then open the image in my drawing program and trace the outline of the features I'm trying to reproduce. I then fill in the outlines with whatever colors or textures I might want to use. It's pretty simple, but it looks nice, and it's way easier than trying to actually find a .jpg with suitable resolution, size, shape, etc; something is always suboptimal when you try to turn a map into a game board.

I find books in the library on whatever topic you're working on to be indespensible for game art. I think in this modern internet era we sometimes forget about the old reliable stand bys. All it takes is access to a scanner and you're good to go.

If you have access to a vector drawing program, there are some great vector art maps in most clip art packages. There are even some goo d(and inexpensive) clip art that contain nothing but a ton of maps. I use one at work from a company called Cartesia (not sure if they're still in business or not). The best part about vector maps is that you can scale them infinitely with no loss of resolution.

Best of luck!!

I recently started looking for maps of the Mediterranean for a game based on greek mythology and found google quite helpful [although my idea of a drawing program at the moment is Paint :( ]

For example, searching on map ancient greek gave me ...

You could almost start a game concept with some of these maps ... for example ...

This is my favorite map site. Most of it is modern, but there are a few historical maps, and links to other map sites.
