Inject it with Flavour

I'm building a gambling/CCG card game (http://www.bgdf.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2399) and I'm looking for a theme or a plot for the game. Earlier in the week, I posted the game idea and since then I've finished alot of the mechanics in the game and now I need a theme. (visit the link above the for basic idea of the game)

Some people have already commented on building it around an Intergalictic Casino. I like that idea but want to explore more.

I had an idea of basing the game on the theme of Light (like the kind we get from the Sun! Not light beer or anything to do with Calorie watching...). I was thinking of having four different colours (which represent different categories of cards ...) and each colour would have their own special abilities. In the game, there is one resource that must be managed to help you win - that resource is Energy. I've designed it so most cards produce energy, and hence it makes sense that everything is made of Light since light is energy! cool, or not cool?

I'm not a theme or flavour person so any ideas woud be greatly appreciated and I'd love (make that LOVE) to hear them!

Thank you,

Rob

Frankly, the color-breakdown of cards has been done to death by Magic. I'd definatly shy away from suits based solely on color. Having each have a given color might be a good thing, but I'd give them some other sort of suit, like Matter, Energy, Void, and Transformation, for example (keeping with the intergalactic theme).

The only benefit you could get by having colors, and using the analogy of Light would be blending and absorbtion of wavelengths. Then you could have the lightwaves created by the player's hand have properties, rather than giving the specific colors themselves properties, which is, frankly, all to Magic-like.

Lightwave properties that could be used in a game like this might be Frequency (color) and Amplitude (number within the suit), and "surface" cards in place of face cards. The surfaces could reflect, absorb, or tint light they appear with, or could be played on other player's hands, to interfere with their lightwave-based hands.

And speaking of interferance, you could also have cards like beam-splitters, polarizers, and mirrors. You could have "quantum routers" that create interference patterns, and much more.

Hmm. As I've had many more ideas with the light-based concept, I've changed my mind. I'd use light and color ove my other suggestion.

Wow. This certainly did get me thinking!

Hedge-o-matic, what do you do for a living? You tend to have an insight into science related topics, and approach ideas from that direction. I mean that all of us learned about amplitude and frequency in highschool, but I doubt that many of us would ever had the idea to use it as suits for a deck of cards.

Well, your avatar tells everything :)

Good thing to have around someone like you.

Hey, thanks! I'm a struggling artist and writer who's teaching for a living. Strange, huh?
