Looking for a theme

I've been trying to come up with a theme for a simple set collecting game and so far I've not been happy with anything I've tossed around so far - so I'm asking for help.

Let me give you the idea in real abstract terms:

Let's say your collecting squares. For each set type there are two varieties. For this example let's say white and black. Youcan collect either type, but not both. So if you have 3 black squares and get 1 white square - you lose both the white square as well as 1 black square, resulting in just having 2 black squares.

I need at least 7 different set "types". I really don't want to go with abstract shapes and would like to paste on some type of theme.

Some ideas I've had so far and haven't been able to really make work yet:
You're collecting some type of matter/anti-matter stuff that can't exist together hence cancelling each other out.

You're collecting bugs where each one is a male or female - if you're collecting males and a female comes along a male takes off after her.

Yes - I'm struggling here!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Nick

Stumped.

Hi Nick,

Sounds like it could be pretty fun without a theme. I think if you really need one, sci-fi offers the most flexible genre. What about alien races that don't get along ? You are trying to board them onto a spaceship and Fuggies (blue) don't get along with Gojams (also blue). In the same idea it could maybe work with a Noah's Ark kind of theme. Fantasy can also be pretty flexible. Maybe your hand is an army you are trying to amass, and sorry the Elves are not going to stay in a hand with Dwarves (they have the same symbol or color as you specified). I'm having a little trouble visualizing it, but let me know what you think. It sounds interesting. I'm working on one that's got me stumped as well.

"When you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way."

Sounds like gangland to me.

P.S. The game itself sounds a little like Coloretto, though I've yet to try that one.

You can use virus as theam:
- Some virus can exist together
- Some virus will attack eachother

Or atomic elements. Radioactive elements can decay. Or matter and antimatter anihillations.

Hi,

It could represent opposing magic powers in a fantasy setting. Fire cancels water, earth cancels winds, bane cancels holy. This magic elemental setting comes from the OgreBattle64 game, but I think opposing magic elements could apply to your game as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I've come to the conclusion that while a theme would make the game "sexier" it would also make it harder to grasp so I'm going to just keep it an abstract for now.

Plus it make doing the graphics much easier!

I think I'm going to need to check into Coloretto though to see if there is any resemblence.
