I seem not to have designed any two player games. To combat that, I thought it would be interesting to try an experiment - a reverse competition.

Essentially, what happens is that people submit themes / mechanics / etc ('The game should be about a couple who are fighting about where to put the teapot on the living room table. The game should be tile laying and involve a gadget.'). For each submission, I'll write up a proposal for how the game would work. People vote for which proposal they want to see. I attempt make a game following the winning proposal, and then put it up on the Game Designers Workshop for everyone to have a laugh at.

If you think this looks interesting, reply with a concept.

Interesting idea, Sebastian. I hope you don't get swamped with too many submissions! Anyway, here's mine:

This is a sci-fi game. The players are heading exploration missions into deep scape or on uncharted planets. There is plenty of luck, yet on the whole the game still has a strategic feel. Cards and card playing play an important role.

Good luck!

A truly noble (and entertaining) pursuit!

The players are rival Ant colonies, besieging a picnic. The Red Ants and Black Ants face off on the familar red & white checkered picnic blanket, vying for the tastiest morsels at the picnic. Pieces of food worth various points are scattered around the blanket, some quite a bit larger than others... Larger pieces are worth more points, but require more ants to drag back to their anthill.

I suspect that too few is more likely to be a problem than too many, but we'll see how things turn out. If there are few, then I'll just spend some extra times on the ideas that do turn up.

The King is Dead (catchy name, huh? ;-))

Twins are squabbling over the succession. They are attempting to persuade the other members of the family (and influential court members) that they are the rightful heir. Characters may be used to provide differing types of resources that are used to win over other characters, but they may be tempted away by a better offer from the other side. No direct fighting however...

Oooh, I like Scurra's idea... The first thing that comes to mind here is that it's all based on "Prestige" which is a good thing. Instead of gaining points for yourself, you're trying to discredit the other player, and end the game with more Prestige than he has... So your actions result in a loss of Prestige to the other heirs, thereby increasing your own by comparison.

I had an idea once that I was unable to do what I wanted with (it was inspired by Battleline, oddly enough):

You're in a courtroom, and one player is the prosecutor, the other is the defender. You both draw cards (evidence, witnesses, motions, whatever) from the same deck, and need to choose which ones to play and discard in order to prove your side - prosecutor wants to prove the defendant did it, defender wants to prove his innocence. Victory is achieved by literally proving your case by an explanation of which cards have been played (i.e. "you've already thrown away the Gun evidence, so there can't be any further cards that would disprove this!" or "all the 8:00 PM cards have been played, so there's no way you can play a witness at 8:00 PM now").

Jason Bourne Meets Safe House:

One player is an Amnesiac, the other has Alzheimer's. The Amnesiac must figure out why the Alzheimer's player must be kept from (Secret Building/Area 51/Safe Deposit box). Meanwhile, the Alzheimer's player must try to remember where he was supposed to go, and what he was supposed to do. If this is too politically incorrect, just have two amnesiacs. The results should be hilarious.

Inspired. Actually, "amnesia" seems like a great idea for a Games Showdown theme - it feels bigger than just a two-player format...

Agreed. Just the barest mention of the idea has gotten my gears turning... If that was a nomination for July's Showdown topic, I second it!

OK. Entries seem to have dried up, so I'll declare the entry phase over. I will now go off and mull over what the details of the games designs will be.
