Role ideas similar to Puerto Rico

I am making this pirate game and I am borrowing the "chosing a Role" mechanic from Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico each player gets to choose a role like builder, trader etc... Everyone gets to do what the role says but the chooser gets a benifit. Everyone chooses one role a round.

Anyway in my pirate fame I have 5 roles so far but I am hoping for 6. here is what I have

Move -Players get to move their ships
Attack -Players may attack each other or merchant ships
Repair- Players may upgrade or repair their ships
Merchant -Player may draw and place a new merchant ship
Trade -Players may trade booty for Victory Points or trade with each other

Any ideas?

Fighter? Are you going to have boarding parties?

That is all represented under attack.

Well you could allow for differences between crew operating cannon and crew with swords.

How about Captain? Some kind of overall morale thing.

Think of a game similar to Puerto Rico. Im not getting into the nitty-gritty of the pirate ships. Attacking will probably consist of rolling a few dice or something of that matter. So any phases that I do add need to be simple. So far I have a few ways of gaining VP

Trading in sets of "Booty" =1VP
Some Adventure cards have VP
Upgrading your ship is worth Vp

What I need is another way for players to get VP.

A few ideas from a similar idea I am still brainstorming (and still looking for a nice theme ... it seems I like a solid theme base ...):

(1) have a selection of the Peutro Rico 'Governor' ... i.e. you guarantee yourself 1st pick next round

(2) provisioning (take on fresh food and water)

(3) snitch (tip off the royal navy as to locations of other pirates)

Your snitch was similar to my "Pirate Killer" Idea its a black ship that roams the board.

But I still need more ideas to earn VP.

Not sure what you mean by 'Adventure cards' but you could have certain 'adventures' be worth VPs once completed (e.g. loot town X and bury the treasure on Y) ... reminds me a bit of Magic Realm where (I think) gold could be gained by picking up certain 'chits' (e.g food/ale) and delivering the to other sites.

Fame is also a natural choice and used in games like Pirate's Cove .

All depends on what you want to be the 'traits' of the winner ... most adventurous, richest, greatest sinker of ships, or a combination ...

Adventure cards are going to be similar to the development cards in Catan. VP is going to be gained in a number of ways and the game ends when a player reaches a certain VP number. Probably 20.

Quick question, just for my own info; is this just a game that you're making for fun, or one that you hope to bring to market? If it's the latter, my comments will be somewhat different (and a bit more critical).

Quote:

I think that "move" needs to be bundled into the other actions; otherwise, whether or not you're allowed to take a certain action will depend on where you "moved" to in your last turn, and moving next to an enemy ship, say, will telegraph your intentions. This may be lessened somewhat if you have multiple ships, but it's still something to watch out for.

I fear that "Trade" may be too close to the "Captain" in Puerto Rico or "Treasure Island" in Pirate's Cove. But if you're just trying to make a fun game, gratuitous borrowing is all right, I suspect.

While some people will no doubt chime in on this subject, my typical reaction to these kind of requests is, "well, that's your job as the designer." Which sounds kind of jerky, I admit, but I think it shouldn't be so bad to come up with ways to get VPs. There are tons of pirate-themed games out there, which means on the one hand that if you don't mind borrowing, you'll find something just by looking into these games. Unfortunately, on the other hand, it means that if you do want to strike original ground, you're going to have an uphill battle. I think just thinking in terms of what pirates "did" -- burying treasure, accumulating fame, swashbuckling, etc -- should give you plenty of VP sources. It sounds like you have 3 routes to getting VPs already. I don't think you need more than that; too many routes to VP and the game will feel too "open", as if there's no reason to follow one path as opposed to another. Keep the game somewhat focused on a couple of VP sources and focus the mechanics on pursuing those sources.

I have, probably like everyone else, done some work on a Pirate game and I may put it up in the Game Design Workshop at some point, if you're interested in seeing someone else's solution to "how to make a good pirate game".

Best of luck with your project!

Re: Role ideas similar to Puerto Rico

One last suggestion about making a pirate game...

I just had to deal with a game of mine whose mechanics and theme didn't mesh. If you have a game with an adventurous theme like pirates, you may not want it to feel like Puerto Rico. If someone is going to sit down and play a pirate game, they'll want action, swashbuckling, drinking grog, and lots of opportunities to say "Arrrrr!" Puerto Rico is a deep strategy game with a somewhat dry historical theme. People playing Puerto Rico will be sitting around a table deep in thought, not making very much noise.

This is not to say that Puerto Rico isn't a fun game, but its mechanics may not fit well with a pirate theme. Either make the role selection mechanic light and fun, or find an appropriately dry theme that will stay out of the way, so the gameplay and strategy can take center stage.

Good luck!

Have you seen the brand-new collectible Pirate strategy game that came out last week? Its an entire game in a trading card pack. The cards are credit-card thick plastic, with die cut ship pieces. You punch em out and actually build the little ships...very cool. They get to move around on a playing surface and fight with little dice that come in the pack. For $3.99 you get all you need to play. It looks really cool...you might come up with a role system to augment this new miniatures game, and publish it as a variant on a fan site. Sorry can't remember the name...I'm sure you'll hear about it soon enough.

The game isnt anything like PR. It just borrows the roles mechanic.
