Spell Casting Collectable Card Game?

Would a game company look at a CCG that has 2 players duelling each other in magical combat.

The reason I ask is that Magic: The Gathering is still going strong. But I don't see why that should stop me from creating a CCG that has two people duelling each other (it was done before Magic, so surely it can be done afterwards as well).

I guess I'm just getting the jitters, my own game is nearing completion for play-testing and I keep making compariosons - even though there aren't any game mechanic comparions to make, just the concept.

Would the game companies be too scared to take them on?

I would recommend you retool into a base game with expansion. Not collectible. Something like Blue Moon. The reason? It will probably be easier to pitch. Plus if the game is good, you could always reinvent as a CCG later - just change the card backs or add a symbol or something. If all it is is cards, you could easily box, what, like 200-300 cards in a small box with instructions and sell allthat for like $24.95. Then come out with 100+ card expansions for 14.95. This would be easier to pitch AND would leave the option of self publishing as all you need is:

Cards
Boxes
Instructions

The costs should be easier to manage (as opposed to a full on board game with bits, a gameboard, etc) and you could still leave your options open.

Just my opinion.

I also wanted to add that I've always thought MTG should sell 1 copy of each set with some additional lands just for the casual player - maybe with a different border. Just a small box with the 350 or so cards in it. Smaller for the expansions in a block. These could easily sell for 30.00+ and 15+ for the expansions. and would be a neat thing for people who like magic but hate the collectible part.

onewOrd, I like your thinking.

My game could easily become a card game (without the collectable part) with expansion boxes. I'm going to give this some thought during development - thanks.

P.S. The thing that always anoyed me with Magic was all the resource cards you kept getting. My game has done away with all resource cards - yipee.

I don't really play MtG anymore. I got tired of trying to keep up with the new sets that came out every 3 months just so I could play in the tournies. It's too much money for me to invest in something just so I can actually win.
I think the idea of having one sort of box set and then expansions would work. My question is, with this set up were you thinking of still keeping it so you could build the decks however you like? Or would they be set decks? If they are set decks, it might cause problems for replay value, just because after several games you've seen all the cards and there's not much else to it, however if the cards could be switch up and what not to create different combos and the like, it would make replay value pretty good. Just an idea. I guess.

You should always allow for deck customization. What you do is have a small number or something at the bottom corner of the card that denotes which prebuilt deck it comes from. This would allow you to rebuild the prebuilt decks when you like or to retool decks as you see fit without losing the "sample" decks provided by you.

Having 1 box with expansions is such an elegant method too. For the cost of 8 boosters of Magic, someone could get a full set of yours. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Hi Arconna,

Yeah, you could still build the deck how you like - As onewOrd said, I think that's a pretty important game concept.

So, it's a 300 or 320 card (haven't made up my mind yet) boxed set containing 1 of each card (all cards are useable togther so no worries there) and with boxed expansions for those who decide to follow one'mystery' over another - I like it.

Thanks.

Creating a CCG for on a spell casting theme is not bad. I also have my own card game idea. The problem is when you want to commercialise it. Since MTG is too strong, there is few reason why people will buy your game even it the rules are perfect.

The idea to use a fixed set of card to make a "Customizable Card game". This can convince your player that they do not seed to invest hordes of money into your game. If you don't want to sell your 300 cards in 1 pack, you can make groups of card for each "color" so that the player can buy only the "color" they want.

I also came up in my CCG, which was intended for a video game, to allow the user to make his own cards. You could define a set of rules that the player can follow to make balanced card and sell blank cards.

I don't want to redesign your game, but it is a good idea that you plan to play your game as multiplayer in team, free for all. It is fun to play in multiplayer.

In these days, there is a lot of CCG that use the idea of controlling creatures. Of course, MTG use monster summoning, but with the arrival of yugioh and then duel master, these kind of ccg are mostly focused monsters. If you can make your game focus on magic spell instead of monster you can bring something new or uncommon.

If you want, you can take a look at a non-CCG called "emmerlaus", it is a basic spell casting game with a common deck for all players. There are 2 version of the game and 6 expansions but the rules are unfortunately in french. I would be glad to help you if you want to get a glimpse of the game.

Hi Larienna,

I understand your reasoning behind your comments. MTG is indeed too strong in the marketplace and it was the reason I started this thread.

I have decided to create a House Deck, there are currently 10 different Houses, containg all the cards useable by that House.

In this way a player only needs to purchase 1 deck and they have the entire set for that House. I will also provide mystery decks containing all spells belonging to that particular mystery, for players who prefer to play with just one colour.

Any comments? Cheers.
