Hi Guys,
I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but where do you begin??? I have never considered making a game before, but I have had a an idea to turn a well-known game into a local phenomenon (I hope!!!!!) How though??? I need to find out if I can use the premise of someone else's game, or do I need to contact them first???

Any advice appreciated,
Thanks,
Miss Scarlet ;)

Where do I begin?

Since this post is in the Game Design section, I'll post an answer here. Note for the future, if you post in the wrong place, it's probably better to PM an administrator and ask them to move it than it is to double post. : )

That all depends on what aspects of the other game you are building on. Are you lifting the mechanics in their entirety? Are you borrowing only a theme? Is that theme copyrighted (like using a Lord of the Rings theme)? Could you provide a little more detail about your game idea and the game that you're basing it on?

Interesting that we're seeing more of these types of questions lately (regarding games based on other games).

Where do I begin?

Hi,

What I want to do is take a well known game and make it local! So chancge all the places on the original board to local places, change all the characters to enable people to use photo clips to play with their friends, and to include to idea of the name, sort meshed in with the name of the city I'm from. This started out as an idea for a gift for a friend and has just taken off....It would be similar to the monopoly spin-off I guess.

I know the mechanics of the game would work, but if I really wanted to think about taking it further, would I have to try and contact Hasbro???

Thanks for replying so quickly by the way :D

Dear MissScarlet

Is this game Clue? You may have a better chance of murdering someone in the observatory with the candle stick and getting away with it then you would getting Hasbro to license out one of it’s staple games unless you have big backing and can promise huge amounts of money. This is not to say you can’t make a murder mystery detective game using your town and the people in it. Clue has been done and re-done by many companies under different names; As a Child i had ‘whodunit’ which I rank as a slightly better version than the original. Go ahead and make your game using original name, art and rules you should be fine.

P.S. i know you said you have never made a game before; you have an idea and that is where all games start.
