Although I've seen plenty of square game boards with circular playing areas, I've never actually seen a circular game board. Does anyone know offhand what the reason is? Can it be done? Is it too difficult for a machine to cut or bind?
thanks,

Both "charlemange" and "de ontembare stad" have circular boards, so it's certainly doable...
I think it's mostly just because it'd be a waste of large amounts of paper, unless you were going to use the corners for something else. Cutting it wouldn't actually be a big deal. Also, it would be difficult to wrap the edges of the board to hide the layering of the chipboard underneath.

Both games are designed by Dutchmen. Is it a cultural thing? I'm more of a triangle man myself, though.
The new (French) game 'Planete Rouge' (Red Planet) also has a circluar board -
Other games with round boards include Barbarossa, Terra, Krieg und Frieden, Risk 2210, and Dark Tower.
You asked about De Ontembare Stad: it's a good game, solid and quite fun. Not my favorite, but certainly ranking in the 7 to 8 range.
The circular boards I've personally seen, De Ontembare Stad and Barbarossa, are not wrapped: the edges of the cardboard are exposed. I don't think you can wrap such a board cheaply enough, as all the overlapping little bits would be a huge pain unless a machine was designed specifically for making wrapped round boards.[/i]
Teuber's first edition of "Barbarossa" had a circular board... and I believe the first edition of Faidutti's "Muertre à l'abbaye" too, but I'm not sure
Aye, it was definitely Teuber's Barbarossa that I was referring to, not one of the wargames.
If you consider Hexagonal to be circular too, Abalone is a candidate.
There*s a game named Eye that rots in my attic (lol). That game has a circular board too, the board's base is rectangular however to properly fit the game inside the neat design box.
It took me a while but I found a pic for you in Ebay. :)

I bought a game called Wall Street Spin. It uses not one, but two round boards! My kids and I are distributors.

The link doesn*t work (at least for me).
Trivial Pursuit: Millenium Edition has a circular board too. It's done so the whole game fits in a "wedge shaped tin". I find it annoying that the box is a 90 degree wedge and the playing pieces are, as they've always been, 60 degrees.
Shrink Wrap, could potentialy be used for the edge of a round board, if u can find any of the right diameter :)
(like used to shrink over battery packs, and electrical wire)
Could also use "monokote", stuff used on RC Plane skin...
(Obviously I do the Radio Control Hobby thing too...) lol.
wow... this is great... thanks to everyone for their replies.
@FastLearner... that was what my concern was... it just seems like unless a manufacturer has special equipment, it would be damn hard to bind a round board. Maybe shrinkwrapping of sorts like Draconius suggested.
I'm not planning on manufacturing the boards myself... I'll let the publisher take care of that (if they pick it up). I just wanted to know if it was possible, or if I'd have to go back to the drawing board (get it... board? hahahaha... sorry, that was pretty bad)

thanks for the info... it seems like a round board would be hard to bind, but apparently it can be done. Those games look pretty interesting btw... have you ever played either of them?
