Hi! Working on a battle game where enemies comes in three classes.
Minions (e.g. Goblins) are easy to kill with one hit.
Champions (e.g. The Goblin Captain) takes a few hits to kill.
Finally, the third category is the Boss-category which is in the end game battle. However, I don't really like the name Boss. It does not feel fantasy. Lord is too specific since a Boss could be a swarm of spiders, a necromancer, a giant or "the tripling dark assassins of Hez-Thulum".
Any suggestions of another name of the Boss- category of enemies?
Also, maybe there are other names for minion and champion as well?
Thanks!
Another name for Boss-class enemies?
I don't know why, but I immediately thought of the PC-game Diablo (maybe because you talk of champoins and minions).
What they did was to just give the "bosses" a unique name, which I think is fitting. If you only have one of each type of boss, this could be a way to do it.
If this is a battle game, you could use military ranks; instead of Boss use General, or Commander, or whatever.
If this game takes place in a dungeon, you could use Room Master, Ultimate Monster, Chieftain, Alpha Presence, and things like that.
If you're just looking for something vague, Supreme Beast, Emperor, King, or any title of nobility.
If you go with military ranks or noble titles, lesser names in the same system would be appropriate; Colonel, Major, Lieutenant and Duke, Earl, Viscount would be respective examples.
A quick search in any online thesaurus will yield many other possibilities.
quick ideas:
Master Mind
Dungeon Lord
I found my brain automatically renaming your tiers as Normal, Special, and Unique, but I don't really care for the blandness of those names. Here are a few others I've come up with:
Normal: Minion, Grunt, Soldier, Troop, Mook, Fodder
Special: Champion, Tough, Lieutenant/Captain, Heavy, Elite
Unique: Boss, King, General, Nemesis, Elite, Kaiju, Leader, Master
Without knowing exactly what flavor you're going for, my preferences are for Minion (normal), Elite (special), and Nemesis (unique). I like the term Minion is because a servant implies a master, and it foreshadows the endgame fight. Lieutenant has a but of the same implication, but it might be a bit too militaristic. I automatically associate the term Champion with the good guys, and I don't think that's the case here, so I'd prefer something else. Elite gives me a feeling of a well-trained enemy, which makes for a good fight. The term Nemesis makes me think of a challenge specifically tailored to defeat me, and that's a challenge I'm eager to try to overcome.
Hero vs. Champion. Probably Hero would be the lesser, Champion = to boss, but that could be a matter of opinion.
In the elemental video game, they adopted the term champion instead of hero, because hero always had the connotation of being a good guy which champion does not have.

Dungeon Lord
Hi Larienna,
I *love* "Dungeon Lord" - Can I use that for my current game??? Progress is being posted on www.OfLegendsAndLore.com.
The final boss of the game would be called the "Dungeon Lord": that sounds really cool!
It would feel very heroic if the bosses are Kings and Queens related to particular "minions" and "champions".
So, for example, you have:
- diamond spider (minion) and a Spider Queen (boss)
- Goblin Captain (champion) and Goblink King (boss)
- dark mage (champion) and Mage King (boss)
...and so on; this could add to the theme and tension of the game ("ok, you have slaughtered dozens of spiders, but can you beat the Spider Queen?").
Master
Elite
Chief
How about supreme, dominant, or apex?
In my gaming group we've been calling boss-class enemies UBG's (ultimate bad guy) for as long as I can remember.
