- Needed
What I need are pictures instead of words for my second prototype. The little cards are going to be 2,5 x 2,5 cm with a picture on it. The cards serve their purpose, so I can't do miniatures instead.
I can't do art, I simply can't. Or it would really look like badly drawn pictures.
I use Hexagrapher for the map, so awesome!

- Own stuff
I could do some sort of symbols in paint. But then I remind the days back in school where I already did draw symbols: "They look like lollipops that are still packaged" (Cannon Tanks). "They look like cigarette packages" (Certain Rocket Launchers) "Christmas ball" (Rifle Infantry).
And with a look on the future. There are going to be different kind of tanks etc. So there is need for some degree of detail.

- Internet
Google is not my friend. I searched, but I simply can't find all the right stuff to even be suitable for little squared pieces. To much color and detail. Or the symbols are not suitable. And my goal is having something in the same style too. But with google, the upgrade cards where easy to find, they are just 1 letter each. Same goes for XP counters, they hold numbers.
In the past I did use pictures from the internet. But they where selecting icons for training and building stuff. Plus they have names on it too. You know, like those in the side bar of C&C? Although, I have other units too than those in those games.

- Advice?
You guys are the experts. Should I stick with my own symbols? Or keep searching the internet?

Might start

Might start here:
http://game-icons.net/

Or pickup up a $10 clipart collection (50,000+) from some office supply store.

Nice thing with clipart is you can sometimes tweak the line points if needed to adapt small bits.

I'm gonna have to favorite that!

Well, thanks. But not what I

Well, thanks. But not what I need.
Although they are all the same style.
And paint can change colours if needed.
Might look into them for my Event Cards, for that they are cool.

But for the units itself. There is a big list that I need to fill:
6 Different Infantry, 6 Different Jeeps, 6 Different Tanks, 3 Different Mines, 9 Different Defences, 3 Different Walls.

Of course I could explain in detail what they would look like. And I don't think I can find them all on the internet.

Like these:

But one style of art with my own "designs" is what I need.

Not something like this:

Although, that looks very advanced compared to my kind of pictures.

Ah, here we go. This one could be a soldier with a heavy gun on its shoulder?

That is the style that I currently am using.
Ain't that bad?

what to do next

X3M -

Dude. Contact me directly via email, I'll be happy to walk you through some cool options.

Short answer - font icons [check out Wingdings/Webdings which should be on your word processor] and use PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS [which you can get for $100 or less] to trace actual pictures. Both methods work great.

You might have some luck here: http://opengameart.org/

or here: http://openclipart.org/

And if you don't want to pay for software Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org) is an excellent free application that can be used to trace photos (and many other things). Of course you have to find photos you can legally trace first. Works derived from some copyrighted photo must still be licensed from the photographer, and possibly also from the copyright-owner of what is seen in the photo. You can't just grab any online photo and make an icon from it (or you could, but if you are caught it will get expensive). Anyway this is a great place to look for public domain photos of military vehicles and such things:

wikimedia commons

Looking at your examples you might be better off using a 3D rendered though: Blender 3D

A lot of work to learn, but once you have some models they can be easily modified to make anything, much much easier for a non-artist than to draw ok 2D drawings.

Well, 3D rendering did help

Well, 3D rendering did help me (8 years ago) in the past as well.
The only reason that I quit that was because I could not make infantry look nice. I only created the infantry weapons.
The Tanks where awesome in my opinion.
The players of that game complained about the bad art though.

The second prototype game would be for testing with some friends. If I ever would make a real game out of it, the pictures would be long gone.

I don’t know if this helps but you may find what you want on Shutterstock where you can buy vector and other images that may suit what you’re after.

This may not help for all

This may not help for all your required icons but thenounproject sometimes has some nice basic icons. Searching "tank" provides 14 results for example.

Shutterstock: google images, but then with the word shutterstock on top.
No, that wont do, sorry. Google is better.

The noun project:
That actually gives me "art" idea's on how to make simple symbols for my Event Cards.

But I think I have to work for the "unit" pictures myself.
The game has to give a RTS feeling. So, I need to make RTS pictures.

Some examples:
Something like these, but then bigger:
http://dune2k.com/Images/Duniverse/Games/Dune2000/Screenshots/Info/3/tan...
This one gets closer:
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091221224217/cnc/images/5/5b/RA_...
In my previous prototype I used this one:
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120309100256/cnc/images/6/63/TD_...
But then I am limited in my designs.

If I create some myself, the pictures will be simpler. But easier to recognise. There is no reward in getting them from the internet. And I have the freedom.
If my game ever becomes popular, I will ask an artist to make pictures.

I uploaded an old picture that I made a long time ago.
Made it in paint. It was part of a game meant for being made with game creator.
I guess, less detail would do the trick. Then my Battle Tank would be done. But at least this is the art what I am looking for.
Now for over 30 other pictures -.-
Any other suggestions on that picture?

Tank image

You actually buy Shutterstock images for something like five for twenty five dollars I think and you won’t have the word over the top. Once you pay I don’t think you need to worry about using them certainly not for a prototype.
I just took peep and one particular tank image that I thought could look good was vector image 59719726 you might want to check it out.
