Following a few weeks of development and an unsuccessful attempt to explain a game concept to a friend over the phone, I would like to check out some examples of games, especially European-style games, with what are generally considered well-written rules before setting out to write my own.

I own a copy of Settlers of Catan (of course I do), as well as Zombies!!!. I found the colorful one sheet in my Settlers game was a terrific example of explaining a game through graphic and textual examples and explanation. Adversely, despite a couple pages of rules, games of Zombies!!! usually leads to some sort of unofficial "house" declaration due to the vague explanations in the rulebook.

What other games, with special emphasis on those with online rulebooks, should I check out?

Great list of posts ...

Very, very helpful.

Also helpful - Rio Grande posts pdfs of pretty much every single one of their games' rulebooks. Scanning through those, plus those BGG posts, has me pretty excited to get working on my own rules.
