Hi All,

Just want to point out beforehand (as also mentioned later) the marvel theme is just because it was easy access to imagery in order for me to make with little artistic input for my own hobby version, i would love to make a version of this game completely original, original artwork, more strategy than luck etc etc but thats where i hit my own creative roadblock

i'm fairly new to the forum but came across this site whilst trying to find a physical version of a game based off of the final fantasy mini game "Triple Triad", there are a couple of games that are similar in design "Lords of War" and "sellswords" but neither of those really struck me with a I MUST HAVE feeling.

Basic concept is a card game, 2 player, on a grid layout. Each edge of a card has an attack value, you place it next to an opponents card and the higher value wins. (obviously there is a bit more too it than that)

This led me onto a path of basically trying to create my own version of the game i wanted so badly.

as you can see from the pictures i went for a Marvel theme, mostly because i dont have the time or the artistic skill to create my own artwork easily, so went for something which i knew i could find lots of imagery for. Although i would love to create a non Marvel, completely original version of the game, but this is where time and artistic skills are needed that i just dont have lol.

i added in some action cards, which had different written actions on that affected play (admittedly quite rushed in thought process) such as shown below.

What i was wondering is kind of two fold:

1. i would love to hear peoples ideas as to how i could make action cards (affect cards) similar to those used in TCG games such as MtG, but make them work on a game which works on a grid system, where cards can be placed anywhere on this grid. How they can affect other cards already placed on the board, or the opposing player etc.

2. this bit of fun has got me wanting to actually develop a game with a bit more thought process and potentially originality, and if there is anyone else that loves the mini game triple triad, has some artistic/creative skills and the want to join in then it would be great to hear from you and to have a laugh just seeing what happens and what ideas come about. Would love to create a version of this game, that appeals in its own right, has some epic original artwork, and a clever strategy edge with the use of action cards/spells/etc etc its a long shot but everyone can hope right :D

Marvel + D.C. Comics

If you are looking for an ARTIST I can refer you to someone who is VERY, VERY good at drawing superheroes.

His name is Geof Isherwood and he has illustrated comics for BOTH Marvel and D.C. Comics. Some of his work include (but are not limited to): Conan the Barbarian, Dr. Strange, G.I. Joe.

This is his FANS website: https://www.facebook.com/Fans-of-Geoffrey-Isherwood-113649502017281/time...

He does all steps of the comic process from illustration, to inking and lastly coloring.

How I know Geof, is because he illustrated my very FIRST game (that I designed and produced) entitled "Quest Adventure Cards(tm)"...

Anyhow Geof's mastery of drawing is very apparent when he goes to cons and draws LIVE commissions (ON THE SPOT!) If you want Superheroes, Geof can draw ALL of them.

The ONLY problem I see is Copyright. E.g. Using a Spider-Man illustration might require some rights from Disney (since they bought over Marvel...) So even if you could get Geof's awesome talent, it might be hard because of Copyrights...

But IF you want to design the game and then submit it to Disney with all CUSTOM artwork (done by Geof for example), well maybe that strategy could pay off.

Let me know...! Best of luck with your game.

Thank you :)

Huge thank you for the comment, I will certainly have a look at his work. The Marvel theme i used was mostly due to available resource, so i would love to have a version that is completely custom characters, so the copyright should hopefully not be an issue. As much as i would love to create a proper Marvel / DC version i'm not sure how receptive Disney and Co would be to a hobby-ist throwing an idea their way when i'm sure big companies do for them all the time lol.

If you have any other artist recommendations that even have a slightly varied style (fantasy based probably more so) then i am happy to investigate any names given to me :)

thanks again

Mark

Actually the problem is you need LICENSING for the Marvel or D.C. characters. But if I understood correctly, you would like to create UNIQUE Superheroes of your own creation and use those for your game, right?

If yes, then I really suggest Geof. He will do an amazing job, so much so that your creations will look exactly like the Marvel Originals.

Oh yeah and you mentioned Fantasy, Geof has also done D&D illustrations. I'm not sure if directly for TSR or for a commission. But I have seen at lot of Geof's work and he has all kinds of stuff in that genre also. Mostly female warriors... Seems to be popular! :P

Anyways if you look at my website: http://www.questccg.com

You will see the INKED-genre I wanted for my game. From the artwork perspective it was a HUGE success. Anyhow take a look at some of Geof's Artwork, just Google him and you'll see a TON of his illustrations. Some pencil others inked and some other colored.

Oh yeah and all the illustrations (most) are Geof's work... He has done literally a TON of illustrations.

Note: Since you used the name "Marvel" on your board, the option you could replace this with is "Heroes" so the board would be "Heroes Battle".

Thank you for the advice on

Thank you for the advice on the name. I've had a look at some of his work and some of it is great stuff. Love the bits on your website too.

I will have to get in touch with him and see what can be arranged.

Thank you again

This may be what you are looking for. Hugely popular MtG-like Russian card game played out on a grid. They recently ran a KS to introduce it to the English-speaking market, and it is now selling for $10 through Tanga.
