Pitching two themes for the same game to one publisher.

Hi y'all. Newbie to boardgame design/developing and have a question for those in the know.

I'm having a difficult time with coming up with a pitch to publishers that will lend itself to my game's concept and appeal equally well to all age groups. It's a dexterity game intended for kids for fun and education in math & physics as well as a risk/reward intellectual strategy/gambling game for adults.

So I'm thinking of pitching two themes for the same game to one publisher.

For instance, I could call the same game "Fun with Fishies" using different aquatic species game pieces & coral reef themed graphics or "Killer Sharks" with poker type chips & Casino type graphics.

Has that ever been done successfully in the boardgaming world or is it a bad idea to pitch more than one theme for the same game to a publisher?

Most publishers will only be interested in one or the other

I'm not sure if pitching two themes for 1 game has been done before, but regardless, the shotgun strategy probably isn't the best approach.

It's highly likely that any publisher you pitch to will only be interested in one or the other - publishers that do kids games will want to hear about those, and those that don't do kids games won't want to hear about them. So tailor the pitch to the publishers needs. Do your homework and know what the publisher is looking for, and just pitch them the theme that's appropriate for them.

I sort of did have more

I sort of did have more themes with my game. I knew the publisher was better other themes... so I included a couple more themes.

I filled out the paperwork and pitch to focus on the core theme, but I included a "Potential Rethemes" section. In this short section I simply mentioned a couple other possible themes that might fit their needs better than the original/

Really though, you don't need it. Focus on one core thing and sell it well. If the publishers need a different theme, most will just ask for it.
