Can you cop special abilities from other games and not worry about any legal infringement as long as there not too similar?

There are special ability which are fairly common, such as bonus attack points. Those are free game. In general I see no problem with this kind of thing
However, many special ability are specific to the workings of the game itself. If you are able to directly import special abilities from another game I'd be worried that your game was too similar not the abilities.
