Theme's (a search for new ones)

For my wargame.

While I got plenty of unit designs. I was thinking of ordering them into theme's. And fill in the gaps that remain.

But for that, I need to have a general starting point "idea" on themes.

A good example for me is MtG. But, playing around with game mechanics is not an option for me. All that I can fiddle with are unit statistics.
The main theme is modern warfare. A bit of old stuff and new stuff are mixed in. Something that feels super advanced, might simply be an exageration.

I was thinking of having 10 groups or armies.
Each their own unique play style.
Each their own unique number as focus point.

I don't know how to swing this.
Either, I give a list of army descriptions and how to play with them. And then suggestions might crawl in for other armies.
Or.
A list of games are mentioned for inspirations.
I am well aware of any RTS design. But if there are board games with unique differences in this. Please.

Main focus point here for me is:
Each colour has its own number. And this number is somehow noticable in the unit designs. It doesn't mean that they are stronger. Simply designed in a different way, causing a different play style and choices. The higher numbers are a mix of previous ones. Sometimes combining 2 playstyles. Or having an "extremer" version of it.

***

The 10 colours are:

1. Green

2. Yellow

3. Orange

4. Red (2x2)

5. Purple

6. Blue (2x3)

7. Brown

8. Grey (2x2x2)

9. Black (3x3)

10. White (2x5)

PS.
I am not looking for art theme's. Only for play style themes. And for how others feel about linking a number to a colour.

colors for units

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking for...Do you want ideas to differentiate each faction in your game (10 is alot and would be epic battling) or do you need to differentiate the units within each faction's army (cavalry, footment, etc)? If it is the latter...

I'm not sure if using different colors for variable units within the same faction is a good idea. I imagine tracking your units against your opponents may get difficult if each faction's unit used the same color scheme to mark unit function.
What about using different bases for the units each faction commands (like in Rune Wars - it's been awhile since I played another with variable units...). Some units have squares, others have octagons, each used to reference the particular unit's order in battle etc.
Another idea is some kind of pip or banner on the unit (base) that would denote their function.
If you're down to get a little abstract, what about using shapes to mark the different units (snipers are triangles and tanks are hexagons...)? Each faction has it's own color and each unit it's own shape.

Good luck!

It is not my intention to

It is not my intention to give a colour to one type of units. Nor to use shapes.

It is more or less my intention to give a certain play style to a specific faction.
With this play style, a certain colour would be fitting. Some examples:
Green = growth and for new players, some simple designs?
Red = agressive, twice as strong, twice as much firepower?
Blue = technological advanced, 6 rockets certainly would do te job??

And the numbers would be represented in the statistics. But also in the tiers of progression.
Green and purple would have a lineair growth.
Yellow and red perhaps an exponential growth.
Orange and blue might show triangular progress.

Any way, to give you an idea of what I am seeking.
When looking at RTS. We have very different races as well.
Zerg, Terrans, Protoss, GDI, NOD, Survivors, Mutants, Allieds, Sovjets, etc.

Of course, every possible strategy has to be able to be countered by a faction. Only some factions might not be able to do all possible strategies. However, the fewer strategies that are possible, have some more back bone to it.

I'll try and toss some ideas

I'll try and toss some ideas out there..

-Robot army.
Grey might be a fitting color, could be quite efficient but lacking in creativity. Could overall be pretty strong in offense and defense, but with unique openings for enemies to exploit because they are robots.

-Commando's.
Green might be most suitable for them.
They could focus more on stealth and guerilla warfare, but have some strong explosives and suicidal rambo-ish front line warriors. Only light vehicles though.

-The fleet.
Blue seems a natural match here.
Using airships, submarines, hovercrafts, marines, artillery support from battleships, etc. They would have a diverse bag of tricks but could be weaker inland and strong at shorelines.

-Pyromaniacs.
Orange could be their color.
Their forces could be mainly basic army stuff, but in addition to that they get flamethrowers, flame tanks, napalm bombs and such. They love fire.

-Airforce.
White might match here.
They could have acces to basic stuff, but their focus would be air. So they can easily drop off supplies, infantry and such and provide air strikes.

-Aliens.
Purple might be fitting.
They could have more powerfull troops but would field much less troops.

-Defensive.
Yellow might work I suppose, They are always on yellow alert?
Trenches, bunkers, slow heavy tanks, rockets.. they exell in defense but are kind of a lumbering giant which makes conquest harder. They are better at keeping ground than gaining it.

-Steampunk.
Brown goes with them.
Using steamtanks, primitive robots, airships, heavy artillery, trains, steamboats, fast moving cavalry with cowboys that wield repeating pistols, snipers, and other stuff you might come up with.

-Agressor.
Red of course.
They could have tanks, heavy missles, fast infantry with heavy rifles, grenade launcers, etc. They would deal great damage but might risk their own troops in the process, being a bit suicidal in their thirst for conquest. Kind of a modern horde of raging barbarians.

-Evil corporation.
Black suits them.
They could field more police like troops. SWAT teams, snipers, attack dogs that can reveal stealthed units, media broadcasts allowing for great radio range, light tanks, attack helicopters that can drop off SWAT troops, armored cars, etc.

I hope this helped although it was a bit of a mix between theme and play style. Maybe it will give some ideas for the possibilities.

Willem, I absolutely loved

Willem, I absolutely loved reading your suggestions. This is what I am looking for. New possibilities. But also knowing how others might look at things.

And having blue being strong at shorelines is certainly one to keep. Whereas other units can do hit and run tactics close to cliffs or from the forests. Having one using water as a medium, is a "must have". I am keeping that idea in. While it is a new one to me (yes, it actually is, strangely enough).

The similarity between your orange and mine is very close. I was thinking in overkill with grenades and light cannons. But flamers certainly fit the bill with the number 3 as well.

Purple being aliens. Well, I guess you like the Scrin perhaps :)
Numerical speaking, I feel them fitting the 5 as well. Health is 5 for each unit (relatively 3). Thus you could say that aliens want to be just like orange. The difference is that they want to be certain to do their job.

It would be funny to have a cowboy themed army. I did not have a description of brown yet and would be somewhat similar to green, but somehowish different. But your idea is a fresh start.

Grey would indeed be a simple minded army. Never thought of using only robots. But I might as well. I think that crawlers and walkers will fit right in.
