What are the best books on game design that you know of?

I would prefer a book that goes deep and well into the theories/knowledge behind game design than light or practical books (because i don't trust those to deliver such good quality of information).

Usually good deep information on almost all areas of knowledge is found freely available on the Internet. I don't seem to find info of my desired quality around the Internet for this field of knowledge, though.

I have many books, there is

I have many books, there is one I have not read yet. Here is my list:

Inventor's guide book (talks more about the publishing)
The art of game design
Game Design Work Shop
Rules of Play. (Not read yet)

Amazon Announced 2 new books related to board game and design that are going to be released in 2012. Take note that there is little books that talks strictly on Board game design. The best you can get is to have a more general game design book that covers Board games and video games. This is the case of the books listed above.

I made a summary of "The art of game design" on my website, but did not have the time to summarize the other books I read. Here is the link:

Enjoy!

I like "Challenges for Game

I like "Challenges for Game Designers" by Ian Schreiber as a solid, broad-base book on design. "Rules of Play" is more thorough/in depth, but it's a much harder book to slog through.

Here's my more thorough list (though it doesn't include a couple of books that were published this year):

Art of Game Design

I've also read The Art of Game Design my Jesse Schell and I totally recommend it. It's a very motivating book that encourages the reader to look at their designs from many perspectives.

Kobold Guide to Board Game Design

I've been reading a newer book called the "Kobold Guide to Board Game Design". It features essays written by a variety of different professional designers. So far, it's been fascinating and very helpful. I think it might be what you're looking for since it's more than a basic introduction to game design. Each essay goes deep into a specific topic.

Also, the pdf-only edition of the book can be downloaded from the Kobold Quarterly website for only $10.

Rules of Play

I have read rules of play and it is a really good book on game design theory. Some people complain about it, because of it is pure theory without any practice. But that is what the book is about and in my opinion you should read it before you start learning game design practice.

Rules of play gives you an idea what game design is about and what makes up good game design and how to do it properly. It also introduces all those theories game design borrows from other fields of research. That might sound a little scientific and difficult to understand, but there are a lot of examples of well-known games used to explain certain game design concepts.

It also provides an introduction into the workflow of game design and gives you an idea how you should solve game design problems. One thing I have learnt from Rules of Play for example, was that you should fix problems by introducing a new feature rather than adding another rule that just works around the problem. If possible you should also target multiple design problems at once, so the change you do to fix them integrates well into a larger part of the game and contributes more meaning to the play. It also explains why play testing your game regularly and as early as possible is important. That's because of games and even more the players and the fun they experience while playing your game are way to complex to always respect when designing your game, that you should rather observe what affects each change you do to your game has on its play experience.

That were only two, but the most important things I have learnt by reading Rules of Play. I recommend to start with that book, if you are interested in game design or designing games your own and looking for new ways to solve design problem and make your games more meaningful and thereby more fun to play.

The Game Inventor's Handbook

Hmmm...this is more about how to get your game published, but there's some very good material in here. It's out of print now, but you might be able to find it at a library, eBay, or online somewhere. The author is Steve Peek. Copyright is 1993 so it might seem very out of date and some parts of it are, but I still believe many of the concepts are are valid even today. Here's all the information listed about the publisher:

Published by Betterway Books
1507 Dana Ave.
Cincinnati, Ohio 45207
1-800-289-0963

I have no idea if the company, address, or phone number are still valid. I just copied what I see here. I hope this is helpful.
