Hello,

I am not sure if this is the correct spot for this but here goes.

I am completely new to designing board games but have played games for a long time. One day an idea came to me to I started to work on it and see where it goes. here is the idea:

It is a completely co-operative game where a group of survivors must survive hordes of zombies find parts for a helicopter and fly away.

the game board is made up of tiles with a grid which is used for moving. there will be a base and 3 other locations which will players will have to get to to draw cards for such as weapons and other resources. I like realism so I will be limiting what someone can carry as well has how much ammo you have. Once you're out of ammo your weapon is useless. Players will start at at the base and an must travel to the three locations to find the helicopter parts and items to fortify the base.

Each turn players will move, fight a zombie and/or draw a resource card from the appropriate deck. after the players move the zombies will move closer to the players and new zombies will spawn.

Does this make any sense?

I am not sure the best way for people to move. Should I go with a roll of the dice to determine how many spaces someone could move that turn, should each player be allowed to move X number of spaces, or should they have a speed rating such as player A has a speed of 3 so he can move 3 spaces.

As for the zombies I was thinking that they would move 3 spaces towards the base or nearest person. Does this make sense for the zombies.

Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Sounds okay so far

If it would be me that plays that game I would prefer a fixed number of movements points, wether it is equal to all characters or depends on a speed rating.
Rolling the dice to determine how far my character can move introduces a great deal of luck to the game and it can be really frustrating if your luck runs out in a critical moment.

Let's say you have the last piece for the helicopter with you and you are three tiles away from the base. You would need a four or higher on a dice roll (3 to get to the door + 1 to enter the base). That makes it a fifty-fifty chance. And you are surrounde by zombies so fighting isn't really an option. It all depends on that one dice roll. This could be really exciting but easily very frustrating.

That depends on how fast the players will move and what kind of zombie you want in your game. Old school so that they're dragging their feet and not really walking? Then 3 may be to fast. Or do you think more along the line of World War Z? From the trailers I've seen these zombies are incredibly fast and agile therefore three spaces wouldn't be a problem.

re: your brains

This sounds pretty good. I would definitely suggest using the speed rating: makes consistent and easy to alter. I have never seen someone move around like they were using 2d6.

You might want to look at Last Night on Earth if you haven't already. It has some similar elements: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhLU2-BuhMI

Thanks for the feedback.

Just saw the trailer for War z and it looks ridiculous.

I was thinking the zombies would move like the ones in Dawn of the dead or i am legend. i want to try and have many encounters with the zombies to try and avoid players just running away from them.

I agree with the dice roll. I hate rolling dice to determine actions or movements. with my luck I will play the game be 3 spaces away and roll 1's until i am killed by zombies.I will figure out a speed rating for the characters.

thanks

Don't want to go off topic but I am curious: ridiculous good or ridiculous bad?

*Snip*

I think a few designers here had a bet on when the next Zombie game would come... Sound the alarm! The Zombies are coming... lol.
