I have no idea where to put this.
It is just a general question. Perhaps the answer is already known here.

Best way to simulate D7 and/or D11?
- I know a way with using cards.
- I know a way with using a bag and pebbles.
- There are rings that have these numbers as well. Are they any good?

But when you need to do a lot of "rolling", what else is a valid option?

Wouldn't the easiest way be to have D8's and D12's, and rerolling all 8's and 12's respectively when rolling?

Yeah, I was having the same

Yeah, I was having the same thought. That suggestions is also all over the internet.
However, infinite re-rolls might occur.
Even though it really doesn't make sense mathematical.

Perhaps this is one of those issue's that has to be ignored when looking at it practically.

Let's say, the game allows 4 re-rolls (5 rolls) for an D8.
The chance happening rolling 5 times in a row an 8 is 1/10.000th is extremely rare.
And it is still faster then shuffling a deck of cards or picking a pebble from a bag.

I guess, I should stick with it.
So what would be the right sequence when you are forced to use only D6 while wanting a chance out of 7?

Is there a list of suggestions somewhere?

The Lord of the Dice

For years, the gamers of the world relied upon the sacred, even-sided dice. They were referred to as the sacred polyhedrals; weapons from a more civilized age. I know that you have never seen one, my boy, but those many years ago, back in a time of peace and prosperity, everyone had dozens of the dice they already needed when they bought a pound o' dice online.

Until everything changed...

One day, the powerful designer X3M, while experimenting in his secret, underground game design laboratory, took the heartplastic from six virgin, unrolled dice. From the heartplastic, which contained the powers of all six of the sacred polyhedrals, he crafted the abominations we know as the d7. Imbued with the might of each of the six sacred dice, the d7 were unstoppable. Madness swept over the land, and the cries of screaming babes filled the ears of all of the conquered. A cry of war was heard from the rulebook east to the laptop west, and all around the gaming table were marching for war.

A last alliance of game designers, brought together by Rich and Lewpuls, marched upon X3M's evil lair; and on the slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of polyhedrals everywhere...

The battle lasted an eternity, as each side rolled their inexhaustible supply of dice. The troops faltered: everywhere, the d7 were puncturing their lines, leaving swathes of molten plastic in their wake. Lewpuls fought bravely upon the walls of the DM screen, but was was felled as a savage d7 slid under his foot, causing him excrutiating pain when he stepped thereon. At long last, Rich rolled a natural 20. A CRITICAL HIT! A break in the lines of the d7 had emerged, and Rich led a last, desperate charge into the heart of their army.

But, his charge was in vain.

For another dice was made. And into this dice, X3M had poured all of his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all gaming.

One by one, the dice of the gaming table submitted to the power of the master dice. The d11 was unstoppable! X3M laughed from atop his loyal d13 steed, and watched as the resistance fell into shambles.

Many good game designers died that day, and the face of our great kingdom fell into ruin. But it is rumored that one day, a brave game designer will arise, with the full power of the d20 once more and rescue Rich from his angular prison. But until that day, I'm just going to have to suggest to X3M that an alternative answer to his problem involves a spinner, but that really, d7s and d11s aren't really necessary and his design could probably be simplified.

D7 and D11

D7: Roll two D4's and subtract 1 from the total (1-7).

D11: Roll two D6's and subtract 1 from the total (1-11).

Just a thought...

If you do end up using the

If you do end up using the above method, be sure to work out the probabilities for each result. For example 2d6 will hit 7 a lot more than 12 or 1. Also 1's will count as 0's if you -1 from the result. Best advice I can give you is to change the rules to use a d12. But if you are still 100% set on d11's perhaps a spinner with numbers 1-11 might work.

I was just giving an option.

I was just giving an option.

(It would never be zero though... And subtracting 1 would make 6 more likely from a probability perspective.)

Having said that, random and probability are two different monsters... Just ask Vegas.

It really comes down to what the situation is that requires a D7 and a D11 and why it's required.

Just my two cents.

(ruy343, I did read your post and enjoyed it. I was just adding my input.)

To be honest:

I just wanted to see whether people would read a wall of text like that. At least someone did :)

Those spinners, well, obviously that is a way.
"But those dice!"

I did read it, and was laughing the whole time! Now, if only someone could actually create a "Lords of the Dice" web-video.... I know there are some animators out there reading this!
