Good afternoon community,

This is my first post here, and I nearly finished with the design of my first card game.
It is a deck-building / card battling game. Similar mechanically to Pokémon cards, MtG, Yu-Gi-Oh, Kaijudo e.t.c.
In my game there are only energy cards and monster cards.

My current problem is, I have still not settled on win conditions (I know, this should probably normally be the first step...) I am not sure what would be best-

The player having life points (like Yu-Gi-Oh and MtG)
The player having shields (Like Kaijudo, so the strength of the attacks don't matter, just the number of times the player is directly attacked)
The player losing when a certain number of monsters have been defeated (like Pokémon)

I am going to start play-testing over the next few weeks to see what works best, but I was wondering if you had any other suggestions?
Thanks for your time!

What is the basic plot

What is the basic plot structure of the game? Are the players fighting against each other directly or?
I think having life points would be best, I'd love to see a deckbuilding game where you fight directly against the player. Rune Age had something similar but it was only one mode of the game.

I think it will depend mostly

I think it will depend mostly in the actual background and mechanics of the game. Life points will be the most flexible option I guess but the actual victory condition should be the one that connects better with the game history (are the players mages? masters of monster?...) and the mechanics IMHO.

I think we need to hear more

I think we need to hear more about how the game is structured. Could you elaborate on your game and how it is played? Otherwise we won't be able to tell you what style is best for your game, only which ones we like in general.

Thank you for the questions.

Thank you for the questions. The card game is based on a video game I am developing called Necromancer, The Fight For Life.
www.necromancergame.com
The video game is set in a fantasy world overrun with necromancers and undead. It is an RPG mechanically similar to Pokemon- players capture, train and battle undead minions.

The card game is identical- two players acting as necromancers summon undead minions to battle each other and destroy their opponent. The players each have deck if 30 cards, energy cards and minion cards. Energy is used to summon minions and activate minion abilities. Minions have HP, attack and special abilities and so I have the mechanics in place for how minions battle, but haven't yet settled on a win condition as detailed above. Does this help?

"Tradewars - Homeworld"

That's what my Deck-Building Game ("Tradewars - Homeworld") is about... Space battles with starship configuration, where you combine the various cards to build starships that you take to battle. A two (2) player game is a "dual" or you can even play a four (4) player "versus" game. With four (4), you have the added bonus of diplomacy and treaties.

Configuration of starships means that there are *numerous* possibilities as to the starships you can configure. The game is a cross between Dominion, San Juan and of course Magic: the Gathering.

And it is also a Sci-Fi (space) so it's not the traditional Fantasy setting! The game has four (4) unique scenarios and the plan is to augment the original product with expansions of other scenarios to keep the game fresh and to help increase the game's lifespan...
