Hello all and sundry. This is my first post on BGDF, and I hope not my last.

I have been working on the idea of a collaborative survival horror game, the theme was up until now zombies, however I had a brainwave and decided that my idea should be tossed out into the universe, literally.

My idea is this: A deep space transport vessel, en-route to wherever, is carrying a group of passengers and crew but unfortunately for them they crash! Well land in an emergency fashion, so they survive the crash only to begin turning on each other initially. However, the local population are less than hospitable and want the survivors for lunch, and dinner, and breakfast the next morning. So the survivors must put away their differences and work together to survive until rescue. The way players interact with each other will be fluid and can change from harmonious to hostile as the rescue draws near, after-all old rivalries are hard to let go.

Potential or no?

Feel free to provide me with your two cents, it would be nice to be able to make an Aussie Dollar :)

Same here...

I'm actually working on a very similarly themed game. However, mine has no hungry natives. Mine involves a set of specialized dice I'm designing, but was originally inspired by a seed someone planted awhile back about the idea of a famine--a game where your empire shrinks rather than grows... Now, mine involves growing your empire (rebuilding your ship) while shrinking your population (crew members may die). So, yes--I think there's definitely potential...good luck!

I like the idea.

I agree with gabrielcohn. I like the idea. I have been thinking about the same type of game. Diffrent theme however. I have been thinking of a collaborative game where all the players try to meet there main goal. In this case to survive until rescue. But that also could each have a side/secret objective. Maybe to ice another of the crew for one reason or another or to hoard resources because they are paranoid other people are after them. These secret objectives could be a way to fuel the needed contention/mistrust between the players.

I think there are is a lot of potential in a game of this sort. Good luck with this. I am interested in where this idea goes for you.

Sounds like a really cool

Sounds like a really cool idea. You could definitely have a wide variety of mission cards, some of which are similar (kill 1 crewman of your choice. kill all female crewmembers. kill half the crew. etc) that way if somebody *does* kill someone, the rest of the crew is wondering if that's it, or if there's more to come.

And make sure to have all sorts of devious ways to off one another - the more secretive the cause the better. There's a popular game at my LGS that has one player secretly take the role of a Werewolf trying to kill/turn players, and the players trying to work together to figure out who the wolf is. All the cards are played into the middle and mixed up so that you don't know who played each card - things just start happening.

Terrific feedback, I now have 6 cents!

Thanks for the feedback. I particularly like the idea of secret objectives that may result in a bit of backstabbing. After-all those rivalries run really deep. Perhaps if I gave each character a number of NPC crew (to represent their 'life') and if you run out of supporters amongst the crew then it leaves you exposed to being 'offed' by another player/character.

Also, this would make the hungry locals threatening, but not the biggest threat to the survivors. A sort of hazard or added complication. The biggest threat should still be each other. Kind of a "I'll help you because it helps me (but I really don't want to), you just watch your back when this is over" situation.

Thanks folks! Just 94 cents to go.
