Hi fellow members of BGDF.... I'm still new in this forum and my english is not that good... so please help me and sorry for my wrong grammars....

so here is the topic I want to talk about.
I'm doing a project for my final year project in design school...
since it's a free topic to choose, I choose board game for my topic because I lie to play board game and also it helps us to interact with our family or even friends.

So for this board game, I've choose animal extinction as the theme of my board game and targeting to children around the age of 9years old and above.

So the concept behind the board game is teaching children about animal extinction in a fun way. rather then reading a text book, by using this board game, I think it'll have more impact.

Since animal extinction is a wide topic, I've narrowed it down to ocean species.

THE NAME:
the board game name so far is: "Blu Ocean adventure". any suggestion for a better name? :)

THE MECHANICS:
Rather than a "racing" board game, which is the paths are already decided, for this board game, I ask the player to make their own way to the finish line. How do they get the path? it is by completing the mission inside the card that they need to draw.
The mission is simply about the extinct animals, such as the reason behind it (make it in a fun way) like overfishing, I'll make the mission in a "catch the thief" form. so it's a role playing game as well.
The finishing line is about water pollution, so if the player arrived at the finishing line, it's like they've save the sea by preventing it from water pollution which usually come from Industrial wastes.

THE CHARACTERS:
I've 6 characters (it's sea animals also) in mind which will be the pawn of the board game. each characters have their own ability and skills to help them in completing several mission. I attached one of the character design, is the character to childish?

Ok, that's all that I've thought about this board game...
any suggestion or improvement for this board game??

I hope I can do well for this project, because it's my last year project.
Hope you guys can help me by your suggestions and comments.

Thanks... :)

Completeing missions to earn

Completeing missions to earn forward advancement sounds fine to me. Are the mission cards laid out on the board?

Im not familiar with "catch the thief" can you explain that to me?

catch the thief

the mission card, either I put it in the board or outside of the board... but since the players need to make their own way to the finish line, I think it's better to put it outside the board right?

Catch the thief:
the mechanic of this is simple actually... using card to indicate who-is-who... for example: the catcher, the thief and the victims. so the catcher need to catch the thief before the other player open the cards. the other player will be open the cards if the thief give them some kind of signal.

I was thinking that the cards would cover the board and players would travel to ones they think they can complete.

This sounds like a deduction element. So what roll does the thief play? Do they hinder the other players or try to win by making pollution?

oh.. I think it can be a consideration as well... at first I think that I prepare the mission card as well as the path. so upon finishing the mission, the path that we can take were indicated in the card. so the player put the type of the path shown in the card onto the board.

It is actually another role playing part... not the main part of the game though... because I think, by using this type of guessing, it's considered as part of the interaction.
so the thief here is worked as the cause of the extinction. like bluefin tuna, it becomes extinct because of overfishing. so the role of the thief here is to be the one who use fishnet to catch all the tuna.

so overall the "catch the thief" is not affecting the main roll of the player.. it just change for a moment because of the respective mission.

How is it? :)
