Game Idea: Deck Building Push Your luck Game

I am been playing Ascension and Star Realm lately, and I was wondering if I could came up with a simple solitaire game deck building game.

There is also another mechanic I do not know the name that I decided to call push your luck. You simply flip cards from the top of the deck and decide when to stop flipping. If you have 2 cards of the same color, you lose your hand.

Now My idea is to combine both ideas together, a deck building push your luck game. The cards flipped will be the cards that you can use to do regular deck building stuff.

As you buy cards of various colors, it will alterate the probabilities of getting busted by a color or another. Players could even make some color scarcer in their deck and know that the chance to bust from those color would be low.

As for the theme, I was thinking about a hacking theme like Netrunner, you have objectives and targets a bit like in Rune Age and Steve Jackson's Hacker.

What do you think?

I like the idea. There's not enough "hacking" games out there, and a solo deck-building game would definitely fill a niche.

Personally, I'd have mechanics for at least 2 player (co-op hacking), but have the strong option to be a solo game.

Maybe you can make it a set building where you gather cards from the terminal, but when you play a hand, you make the set to "hack in".

Your idea is definitely intriguing.

Solo Deck Builder

I've got one solo deck builder in my collection: Friday. You can somewhat push your luck in that game after your initial flop with additional cards at the expense of Food. Food is in a limited supply and difficult to replenish. (Also, there is a risk that the cards in your deck are not always good effects for you)

As far as going bust with a duplicate card/card type, it might depend on what happens when you go bust:
1) A zero turn: if you hit the second card you turn ends, and you simply discard the cards you've flipped and try again next turn. This would make for un-fun nonturns.
2) Immediately stop further draws: This doesn't seem like push your luck so much as just flip cards til you hit the stop condition
3) A negative effect: This could trigger after just taking two cards from your deck, seems unfair. Especially when it could possibly happen multile turns in a row.
4) Something else, which I can't see right now.

There would need to be something that rewards playing more than a single card (the minimum to never go bust) because without knowing more, that seems like the guaranteed strategy. Perhaps different card types trigger different effects for going bust? Also, I suppose another twist could be something like: a positive effect and then stop future draws.

As far as a solo

As far as a solo deck-building experience goes, I haven't found one better than Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game. Full disclosure, it currently holds the title of "my favorite game of all time," so I may be a little biased. But if you want to get a feel for thematic, engaging, and mechanically fun solo deck building game, definitely give it a shot. It may give you some ideas. Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game

As for the mechanic of drawing two of the same causing you to discard your hand, I think that's a fantastic mechanic! Anything that causes a player wince and grit their teeth right before doing something is the center of the bull's eye in my opinion. Abyss has a mechanic sort of similar to this, but not exactly. Still, it may give you some inspiration. You can see it in action here (I synced it up to the correct time):

Have you tried Flip City?

Your idea is interesting for sure. Have you tried Flip City yet/ That's kind of like a micro-deckbuilder (only 5 types of cards) and it has a press-your-luck aspect.

The cards are double sided, and you don't have a hand, you play them off the top of your deck. Some cards have frownie faces on them, and if you play 3 of those in a turn then you "bust" and get nothing for the turn. The kicker is that some "bad" cards (you start with 4 in your deck) FORCE you to play them, and they have frownies on them.

Your way is a bit different, but it's cool - I might suggest something like if you bust, then you get a minimal turn rather than a null turn, because null turns feel so crappy, especially in an engine building game (and deck building is basically engine building). So like if you bust maybe you only get $1/card vs the $2-$4 that each card is normally worth - something like that.
