I've been working on a game now for 3 years and I think I'm ready to show it to a publisher, but I need a name. At first it was called Ancient Greece, but a friend said that sucked. If he thinks it sucks then it definitely sucks. I called it Olympus for about 6 months before a game called Olympus got published. Then it was called Pantheon until Pantheon came out. I think Acropolis is taken, too. Only names you are willing to part with, please. My game is based on the gods of ancient Greece. Thanks for the help.

The name of a god?

Hi,
I have not checked if they have been taken already as game names, but maybe you can choose one of the gods' names as a title?
Here is a list:

ZEUS sounds like a good name to me....

Hellenismos (or Hellenism) is

Hellenismos (or Hellenism) is the religion that worshipped/revered the Greek gods.
Olympians are the principal deities of the Greek pantheon.
Dodekatheon is another name for the twelve primary Olympians.
Naós (ναός) seems to be the Greek work for a temple. It also can refer to the specific room in the temple that houses the figure/statue/icon of the deity.

Good luck finding a well-fitting name!

What is the general subject

What is the general subject matter? Yes, you could slap a name on it for the time being, but if you show it to teh publisher, and they like it, and want it to be called the name you slapped on it, its better to make sure you put a name you're willing to take to the bank.

So, what's the subject matter? That will help narrow it down, and allow a wordsmith to make some good suggestions.

I kind of like Naos, too.

I kind of like Naos, too. Then again, I'd better check that it's not in use.

Subject

Each player plays as a Greek city state, each of which is favored by a different god. The players bid prayers to win a god's honor. Each god gives a different action. Zeus gives VP, Hera gives more population members, Artemis grants food, etc. Unfortunately, the description sounds like the Olympus game that came out recently. I am a little bitter, but they got theirs published first.

Cool. So, how

Cool. So, how about:
Favor
or
Favor of the Pantheon

If you use a non-greek name like those above, you could switch which pantheon you're using so it doesn't feel likes it's following Cyclades footsteps. If could just as easily be Babylonian, Egyptian, Celtic, or Norse, with a little bit of additianal research.

Not taken

These are Olympian gods so why not "Olympians" or Olympus". "Immortals" might work as well as the name "Sacrifice". "Deities" is also not taken.

Olympus is taken. I've

Olympus is taken. I've considered Olympic Pantheon. I don't know that the game is missing anything. It's got a lot of resources and theme. I'm not sure about changing to a different deity set. The actions kind of fit with the gods.
Zeus gives VP
Hera gives population members
Apollo gives medicine
Artemis gives food
Hermes gives land regions (exploring)
Demeter gives fields that provide food
Hades gives money
Poseidon gives ships
Athena gives knowledge
Ares gives soldiers
Hephaestus gives city regions
Aphrodite gives population members

Inspired by Action

Names can be true to the theme but ultimately sound rather dull. Words associated with related action inspire far more excitement. Names heavy with theme may have difficulties appealing to a wider audience. Think in terms of your game being a movie to derive a name. "Clash of the Titans" is a good example. One approach would be to rename this movie with an alternative that invokes the same sense of excitement. "Titans" does convey the theme but "Clash" drives home the element of action.

If not directly based on action, a generic phrase may work well. The objective is to allude to the theme without boldly stating it to generate curiosity. "Heavens and Earth" comes to mind. Action is implied from the combination of two opposing factions.

I found this "The ancient Greeks referred to themselves as citizens of their individual city-states. Each city-state (polis) had its own personality, goals, laws and customs."

at http://greece.mrdonn.org/city-states.html

So how about Polis?
