Hi folks,

First post from a new member here.

I had an idea for an adventure game, kind of a simplified role playing game. At the start of the game you pick a character, with the stats being somewhat customizable.

Each character starts out as a low-level wizard or other magic user, in a land where everyone lives underground, like a classic dungeon crawl. Each character card has space for stats, maybe as tokens, and squares to add ready weapon, etc. Spells are also on cards, but have to be learned to a given level, although they can be cast at a lower level (for less energy expenditure) than what they've been learned at.

The game will be played on cardstock boards, perhaps 9 inches square, which each have several passages and/or chambers. These boards can be assembled in different ways to create the maze of underground catacombs which will be used in various quests.

Items, including magic items, may be tiles with a summary of their capabilities, that fit on a character card, or perhaps they will be cards themselves, with a place to track (for instance) how many charges are left in a staff using tokens. Not sure about that part yet.

Another part that is still to be decided is how to handle encounters. Other creatures ("monsters") in the game have cards, but how to determine where they are encountered, with what frequency, could be handled in various ways. Some encounters would be events like broken bridges, and not creatures at all. And not all creatures are necessarily hostile.

Each quest would have a set of tiles to assemble for the map, and a specific goal (or goals) to achieve. There will still be room for randomness and player creativity in solving a quest.

Have you played games like this yet?

Hi, and welcome to BGDF -

You're idea could prove a popular one - and it already has with a number of similarly themed games having appeared over the years. Do you have any background playing similar games? Larger, more epic games like Descent take a few hours and can be turned into a campaign similar to an RPG while quick concept games like Dungeon Twister only share the "dudes in a dungeon that can change while we nab treasure" theme.

The list is much larger, as you probably know. How many of have you played? It'd be great to find a new twist on a familiar theme.

If I had a nickel...

My english is terrible. Is it
"Being there, done that", or "Been there, done that"? ;)

I agree with the above. What exactly are you bringing in with your game? Because there is much dungeon crawling around.

Welcome to the forum. Keep thinking!

PS edit: Hey Dralius, nice new avatar! What is it in the background?

Sounds fun!

Your description sound like a combination of Munchkin, Space Hulk, and what little I've seen of the new rules for magic in Warhammer.

While I have pretty much no experience of dungeon crawling board games, the idea of small boards with sections on them (doublesided?) to roam around on and competing with incinerable enemies sound decidedly Fun!

Please keep us informed of your progress!

Welcome

The concept is not new, however what kinda of idea does your game have to make it stand out from the rest? I suggest playing most of the games mentioned above, mainly Decent, and see how you can make it different. :)

And again welcome to the forums!

Limited experience with the genre

Haven't played too many of these. The classic Dungeon game from TSR, and several variants of Master Labyrinth. Neither of them are really very RPG-like. I realize there have been many takes on this, and we should play more of them. Descent looks like fun.

Much more experience with old-school RPGs like AD&D, Runequest, The Fantasy Trip, Empire of the Petal Throne, etc. I will try to bring something new to the mix, in mechanics if not in theme.

I'm new here as well. The

I'm new here as well. The reason there are so many of these types of game is because we LIKE these types of games. New mechanics are great as long as they don't detract from the theme or overcomplicated the play in my opinion. I have played most all of said games and routinely seek more of the same. Often for me it's the background story that compels you and draws you in. You could have 2 nearly identical games and one may just feel more fun to play. For me story drives it all. If you can make me care about the characters or the goal of the game then I will be much more likely to want to play again even if it is a simple roll and move. Most all here will know more about design and game balance than me and I merely speak to the feel of the game. I have never felt like a real estate mogul playing Monopoly but I know I feel like the question champion who longs to be King while playing Talisman.

Good luck with your game ideas and don't give up.
