Hi!

Back in 2015 I had an idea of doing a bare-knuckle fighting game loosely set in the Victorian era. I did a few illustrations and even posted something about it here. Then life happened, I changed job and started working long hours. Somehow, the game project got buried.

A year ago, life happened again and I got a daughter. Now I am taking a few months off to raise my little girl. As it happened, she sleeps 2-3 hours a day. Somehow, the game project resurrected and is now almost finished.

I have a working edition that has been play-tested furiously by me, my wife and a couple of friends (yes, I should and I will expand that circle shortly). I have some polishing to do on the graphic design and fonts, but other than that, I'm rather pleased.

Gameplay is fast and action packed. You can do all the classic punches (such as jab, hook, uppercut and cross) as well as power punches (such as haymaker, spinning backfist, hammerfist and overhand) and of course combinations as well as some illegal moves (such as stomp, knee, elbow and headbutt) as that was all common back then. On top of that you have special cards such as "taunt" and "feint". The illustrations are very light-hearted and the game is just intended as a simple filler and celebration of the good old heritage of boxing.

One thing is missing though, and that is a good solid name.

I wanted to go with "Fisticuffs" as that would have been rather spot on. But unfortunately that was taken not so long ago.

So, here's my list of names so far. Would love your input, and possibly, your name suggestions. If I pick your name for the final version, you will of course get a free copy of the game.

1. Bare Knuckle Slugfest
2. Bare Knuckle Fighting
3. Bare Knuckle Prizefight
4. Bare Knuckle Brawl
5. Victorian Prizefight
6. Fisticuffs Frenzy
7. Prizefight

Thank you in advance for any help and taking your time. Cheers!

Bare Knuckle Brawl seems the

Bare Knuckle Brawl seems the most spot-on..

The connotation is very different, for me, than "Fisticuffs", which sounds like a very polite fistfight.

"Brawl" was the first word to pop into my head when I saw the subject line.

Thank you! Only thing with "brawl" is that I worry that it doesn't fully capture that the competitions was regulated to some extent. They were called "prizefights" and did have at least a few rules. A brawl seems more unstructured and spontaneous. But I agree that it has a rather good ring to it.

Haha.. Seems a bit too far fetched. But I give you "A" for creativity. :)

Characterization

Could you go with something a little more character-focused? Maybe something like, Bare Knuckles: The Age of Jack Johnson. Don't know any of the late 1700's fighters and the pre-glove days, but I'm sure there are some notable names.

The artwork you've started with hooked me (no pun intended...) even from when you first mentioned the game. Adding something into it related to the historical lore would add to it even more.

I really like the word

I really like the word Fisticuffs, because it evokes the imagery of gentlemen boxing in the parlor of a house. Since the word alone is taken, I recommend:

Never Enough Fisticuffs
Fightin Fisticuffs
Fightin Fists (since fisticuffs is literally defined as fighting with fists)

That's an interesting idea. I'll have to think about that. Great input.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I'll happily share the rest of the artwork too once I have polished the graphics a bit.

I sort of like "Never enough Fisticuffs". It is slightly on the humorous side and would fit well with the theme. Only thing is that it is a bit long perhaps?

"Fighting Fists" is also pretty good. Very descriptive. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to really consider these.

Prize Fighters

How about something in the middle like "Prize Fighters"??? I really did not like "Fisticuffs" ... sounds TOO Gentlemanly-like to me.

But "Prize Fighters" brings back a thought about Boxing (and bare knuckled). I know the idea is to have something more "civilized" than a brawl, meaning that the fight was "organized" and there were rules to the battle.

Cheers and best of luck with your game!

"modern" boxing began in 1867

"modern" boxing began in 1867 with the introduction of the marquees of queensbury rules. this term, for me at least invokes the image of fisticuffs at dawn with handlebar moustaches. so my sugestions would simply be
"queensbury" or "queensbury rules"

Exactly!

Is "Prize Fighters" better than "Prizefight"?

This is actually pretty darn brilliant! I don't understand why I didn't think of it myself? :D

Only thing is, with the Queensberry rules came the use of gloves... "The gloves to be fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new."

I have drawn everything with only wrapped hands. Would be quite the project to redraw all cards.. :(

But this got me thinking - the rules prior to the Queensberry Rules where the "London Prize Ring Rules". Those are not by far as well known of course. But they do fit perfectly with the theme. But by tweaking it slightly I think we have a winner. That would be "London Prizefight" or "London Prizefighters".

I would consider it a tie between you and questccg so I guess I'll have to send both of you a copy of the game. :D

Cheers for all the help here! And big up to BGDF for providing an immensely valuable platform.

Like Street Fighter + "s"!

Actually I think "Prize Fighters" is probably BETTER. It's a play on the game "Street Fighter"... I know the game is singular and "Prize Fighters" is plural... That's just to make a small differentiation!

Other suggestion:

"Bare-Knuckle Combat"... A play on "Mortal Combat"! (LOL)

Note: My personal favorite is Prize Fighters...
