Hey guys I had a few ideas for never ending board games. I think we should pick one and basically make it into an actual board game by designing the rules, sharing ideas, making graphics...

Here are the game ideas:
1.Ultimate adventure game
2.Intergalactic space traveling game
3.mechanical world game
4.steam-punk world game

Sorry if those ideas are a bit vague, here are some explanations:

Ultimate adventure game : this will be a game where you and the other players are adventurers and you complete quests for a town which rewards you with Gold, Skill points, Experience, Hero points for every quest you finish. In the town you can buy weapons, armour, items you can also sell things in the town and you can train in the town. Some items might require certain levels to use. Also this game is located above ground and you will NOT go in Space or underground.

Intergalactic space traveling game : this will be a game where you and the other players are space explorers working for earth. You complete quests for Earth, a quest involves beaming down on at least 1 planet maybe even more. After each quest Earth rewards you with money, Skill points, Experience and hero points. When you are on Earth you can buy weapons, armour, items also you can sell items and you can train for special abilities on Earth.

Mechanical world game: this game will be where you and the other players are trapped in this mechanical world working for an ultimate mecha slayer (who is also a human trapped in a mechanical world). you do quests for this ultimate mecha slayer and after each quest you receive scraps of metal, tools, training, hero points, Experience etc.
you have to make your own armour, weapons, Items etc.

Steam-punk world game: just like the mechanical world game but steam-punk

Ok thats all and It would be nice if you could tell me which game you want to make/talk about.
Here is an example of how you could say which games you want to talk about:
1.Mechanical world game
2.Ultimate adventure game
3.Intergalactic space traveling game

That was just an example and also you don’t need to have three things on you list you can have 1 or 2 or even 4.

Why would you want to play a

Why would you want to play a never ending board game?

Why not just play a RPG instead, they are so much better if you are looking for a never ending game. It seams making a RPG into a board game takes away alot of what is fun with a RPG and do not put wats fun with boardgames into it.

Maby I just got it al wrong...

A neverending topic

I don’t often contribute to BGDF. To be completely honest I am more of a reader than anything. Something I found interesting as a reader is this very subject, as it comes up at LEAST once a month. I check BGDF from time to time and this subject is nearly always posted in one format or another.

So then, on the topic of a never-ending board game. What you are searching for already exists; you simply haven’t been exposed to it yet. Take some time out of your day to research “skirmish” miniatures games that also have an experience element. Thiers so many out it’s hard to list them all. These games offer the player competitive play with an overall goal in mind and allow the player to walk away from the table with “something in hand” ; you take away from the table some experience/gold for your heroes.

A rather simple example of this would be 4th Ed DND, it’s the bastard product of WOTC and the original brilliant works of Gygax and his legion of fans. Though so complex it quickly becomes more “work” than play I think this would be a solid place for you to start your research.

A few minor points to consider when you approach such a broad project; these are things the current franchises seem to have ignored or missed.

• Players aren’t calculators.

• “Downtime” also includes time spent screwing with bits, parts, pieces, and dice.

• A rulebook should only be for reference, time spent by one player reading or clarifying a rule is “downtime” for everyone else.

• If the creation of a character/icon/ avatar takes more time than a single “game” then you should assume there will never be “casual” players of your game.

• “Adults” live lives based on time, if your game takes longer than a few hours to resolve (2-3 hours) then you can cut your audience for the game in half.

• If your players wanted a video-game they would play one.

• Lastly of course think of the financial investment of each player. Just because “Bob” is crazy about the game doesn’t mean Tony and Jules are willing to make the same financial investment.

And that’s why zombIes don’t eAt other zombIes.
