New SciFi Card/Board game hybrid needs dose of creativity...

Hi everyone! I have been lurking on here for the last few months while developing my own card game/board game hybrid. The first version of the rules is all but set, and right now I am creating the card list. All of the stats and card type for each is done (there are 3 factions, each faction's cards have identical stats for now). What I would love is for some help from all of you coming up with unit ideas for the cards.

Factions:
Haven - abandoned human colony, very much a modern military feel
Union - group of advanced civilizations that is trying to bring Haven into its interstellar alliance (Haven is resisting, of course!)
Autonomy - clandestine organization made of Union dissidents who want planets and species to be able to rule over themselves

Unit types:
Infantry (basic, defense, anti-vehicle, anti-infantry)
Vehicle (light, medium, heavy)
Hero

What I would love is to hear some ideas on what can fill in the following spots:

Haven:
Medium vehicle (want to stay away from "tank" if possible, their light vehicle sort of like an ATV, their heavy vehicle is converted industrial equipment as they were not prepared for the invasion)

Union:
Light Vehicle
Medium Vehicle
Heavy Vehicle

My initial thought is to just use your own proper names. If you look at Starcraft, they have a number of vehicles like Vulture, Thor, Hellion, etc.

And back in the real world, move people know what a Humvee is despite it being a pronunciation of an acronym.

You'll have a lot more freedom in artwork that way too.

Good point. I will be giving

Good point. I will be giving all units proper names as you suggested. Most of the units I have now are called things like "Auger", "Vanguard", "Reapers" etc.

I just like having the basic idea of what the unit will be. For the Union, the reason I don't have any vehicle ideas at the moment is because I can't get away from them all being some sort of drone or having all of them be too similar, if that makes any sense.

Hmm interesting dillema,

But don't give up. Love the artwork. Reminds me of alot of video games and movies from past to present. So I can relate to that. Two thumbs way up. So hmm... Union units? Names. I'll be glad to help you out in the naming department.

Ideas for the vehicle concepts.

First, we need to establish planet terrain. Is the planet your story similar to earth like conditions? Snow covered mountains , desert terrain, swamps, jungles, forests, etc? Or similar to all of our planets in our solar system with their own invironments? This will help us decide what vehicle is best suited for the terrain.

Thanks for the compliments on the artwork, I had some commissioned over the last year and a half to actually help myself out more in terms of developing the game!

The terrain: definitely an earth-like planet. Most combat will be taking place outside of major cities (there is a big plot point that explains why), so the planet has varied landscape, but I do envision dense forest covering most.

Reading your description, I'm thinking of sort of a mashup between a segway and a battle suit (from the novel Starship Troopers or like a marine from Starcraft). If it's mostly forest, traditional vehicles aren't going to work, so you'll need something agile.

Anything resembling the speeder bike from Return of the Jedi will likely be seen as a rip-off, so something like that is probably off-limits unless you can make substantial changes. That's how I got to the motorized power suit idea.

Very true. What about a suit that allows limited flight over the treeline? But then I am thinking it would be "Iron Man-y".

Low-altitude craft that deploys/controls 2 or 3 drones or robots?

Union... I'm reading clean design from the armor.
Light could be a Chrome ball that rolls and bounces with inner chamber for the one or two riders.

Medium could be a dark soft edged cube that hovers and drifts. Deploys armored sections

Heavy... it's an alien invasion, it needs shiny glowing saucers.

I like the idea of hover type

I like the idea of hover type stuff. The heavy vehicle could be a floating saucer that launches hyper-accurate strikes (but needs the intel to do so). Hovers at about 50 meters above ground and is slow.

Medium could be faster, lower and carry two soldiers that can be deployed to fight with it. Or perhaps it deploys as a small bunker for the soldiers to fight out of.

Small could be a bunch of small drones that fight as a group, quick, but fragile, call them 'swarms'.
