Hello I am new here and wanting to talk about my power rangers inspired board game Spectrum Force.

When I was younger I used to enjoy watching power rangers and with the upcoming power rangers movie I thought to myself why isn't there a board game that isn't some monopoly re skin.

I have been working on my game for over half a year and working on the 6th iteration of my prototype.

In the design of my game there were 3 aspects that I wanted my game to encapsulate: having a story, teamwork and fun.

In regards to the story I want to do scenarios that provide a brief intro explaining the situation the spectrum Force has to solve and events that happen during the scenario to make the players feel they are being a hero.

With teamwork their are a lot of ways the players can assist one another the main way is a mechanic called team attacks were players can boost the power of their allies attacks. As well as that there are cards to protect other players, provide healing and provide buffs.

With the fun I wanted the game to be replay able so there will be lots of different scenarios, villains and minion groups allowing for lots of different combinations as well as that there are some amusing little rules added to make the game feel laid back.

I will be posting more about the game but first I wanted to hear people's thoughts on the premise.

Cool

I think this is a neat idea and better than any of the Power Ranger's games I have seen. Making a game using someone else's intellectual property (IP) is harder than going with your own theme, that you don't need to license...

...but in this case it looks like whoever owns the rights did not care that much about what sorts of games got made with the IP.

I can't say all those games are "bad" just not that popular or widely successful.

There are very few ninja

There are very few ninja games that are any good, so if you can pull it off, it'll be quite the accomplishment

I like the premise of your game, and having a teamwork system that keeps everyone engaged even when it's not your turn is a great idea.

Are you going to have zords? Or just stick to the hand-to-hand combat?

Good luck!

For reference my game will be

For reference my game will be called spectrum Force not power rangers I will not use any current designs or names the only similarity will be the coloured suits and in that case I am just being inspired by the sentai shows that spawned power rangers.

In regards to zords they are there as is the mega zord it has been hard to create those let me tell you. Following the theme of sentai the main villain has 2 character cards a normal 2.5 by 3.5 inch card and a giant one which is 3.5 by 5 inch card.

Once the small leader is dropped to 0 health the game escalates to giant mode. At this point the players flip there character and weapon cards which are dual backed and have a zord and zord attack on the back and the small leader card is replaced by the bigger card. Though I will say I won't call thes robots zords for copyright reasons.

For the mega zord it's handled differently at the start of the game 1 super robot card is picked per player. When robt mode unlocks the cards become available the cards are very strong and cost a lot of actions to activate however all players can share the cost of the card to activate them to show they are working together.

That sounds like a really

That sounds like a really neat and interesting system. Basically, the game will be played in phases.

I imagine it's tough to make the mega zord concept work. It's difficult to make players work as one entity and still each have interesting choices. The way you've handled this sounds like a good idea.

Yeah the mega zord was a big

Yeah the mega zord was a big issue players wanted it but how to implement it while keeping all players involved. It took some playtesting to come up with communal cards that unlocked and could be used by anyone and can be paid for by all players so that players can pool there actions to do strong card effects.

Interesting

I really like the idea of everyone flipping their cards and having the game move into the final fight mode.

One way you might build synergy is to have an "ability or effect" that stacks from one "zord" card to the next. This gives the player to your left and/or right a bonus to only one of their actions, but only if you used that "stacking action" on your turn. Based on who has each character and how they are seated at the table, this changes everything about how that last round might play out.

Just a weird thought I had after reading your post... I hope it makes sense.

Your game sounds more and more interesting the more you tell us about it!

I don't mean give cards to

I don't mean give cards to other players... your card would have the bonus on it and the direction the other player needs to be sitting on (direction arrow) to gain the bonus. Think about the way 7 wonders player boards interact for "Trade" & "combat" but in this case, it would be a good thing.

I hope that makes more sense.

If I understand it correctly,

If I understand it correctly, I assume it's a card game, yes? or is there a board?

Either way to have the team aspect, maybe it's good to have each character at least a little different from each other so that they can complement each other's strenghts and maybe compensate for flaws too if they have that.

Also keep in mind that since you are making your own force here, it gives you the freedom to do things a little differently to adapt it to your game. Like weapons being a shared pool and not individual to each character for example. If that would benefit the gameplay.

This is a card game but there

This is a card game but there is also a board to help with setup.
In regards to the player decks I am walking a fine line between similar and different.

Each deck has there own play style and certain characters provide specific elements that others do not the main similarity is that every decks attack strengths are roughly equal but also different in some ways.

I am still in the early stages so I will be working hard on differentiating the decks while keeping them all balanced.

I will be actually posting all the cards for one of the player decks soon to give people a better idea of what to expect.

damn!

If you can pull this off it will be legendary.
I mean they'll make a movie about you or something.
I'm working on a Battle for Wesnoth mp scenario thing and of course a job, but I'll certainly make a point of coming round to check in on how your Power Rangers inspired game is going.

complete tangent: thinking about this caused me to come up with concept for a bad parody movie. The power rangers grow up after having defeated the whatever and they drink too much, do drugs and engage in ...questionable practises, they're also very out of shape... physically and mentally. They go rampaging through the streets while drunk in their zords and the slim pretty one (there's always a slim pretty one in every series) becomes bad-tempered, matronly and has like 4 kids. She has to take them in the zord while she's smoking and breastfeeding the baby with curlers in her hair and swearing to her friend Gloria over the phone about how Carl's maintenance payments were late again. That said, when she has to fight the smaller bad guys in way too tight spandex ("how the hell did I ever fit into this thing?!") she just like pounds them.

Anyway, sorry about that, cool game idea, good luck with it.

its fine i go on tangents all

its fine i go on tangents all the time I will be working on including cheesy stuff to make the game feel even more like the show that inspired this as a for instance of optional rules that exists.

At the start of the game all players may shout out a transformation phrase at the same time to deal 2 damage to all enemies as they transform and multicolored explosions go off around them.

When a player wishes to have a turn they may say some silly line to declare they are acting. In example: Spectrum Red moving out, Spectrum Blue acquiring target etc.

Also when the players finally defeat the boss they may all shout out a finishing move name. I.E: Final Wave, Ultimate Buster etc.

Thank you for the comments a print and play will be available in a month or two also if you are interested i am currently testing my game on tabletopia.
