A game, at its base consists of : Mechanics, Bits, and a Theme. The rest is superfluous.

Some Background:
I am thinking of either launching into creating a new card game (mechanics and details and bits to be announced as they happen!) or launching a full scale "Board Game Designers Forum" members' game. Where we can all chip in and develop something together. But it got me thinking, RPG, Aliens, WW2, Future Wars, Dystopian Society, Train Simulation, Racing Cars, New World Americas Exploration, European City Resource Management, Futuristic Robot Warriors, Superheroes etc. these have all been done, hashed, rehashed, murdered and done again; some better than others, so What are some unexplored themes that you think have alot of milage in them, or some that have never been done before and you wonder why?

Ideas:

  1. War Correspondent / News Journalist
  2. School Yard Bully / Geek-Group at school

Let's start with "War

Let's start with "War Correspondant" some kind of news team or journalist struggling to get stories to satiate his employers News Corp a la Clark Kent or Peter Parker.

You could have NPC's such as Camermen, Boom Operators, Drivers, Local Correspondants, Snitches, people "working for you" in other big companies, Whistleblowers etc.

Perhaps victory would be somehow to do with acruing the best stories and publishing the best journals via some kind of quest system : "Get the inside scoop on the current civil war in X" you would need to accomplish certain things in order to get the rewards offered by the quest.

great idea !!

That's a very interesting theme!! You should definitely run with it !!

Also, not to be rude, but you should probably in a game about journalism make sure correspondent is spelled correctly. :)

Cool, it would have to be a

Cool, it would have to be a triumphant game no? As in, you are being actiavely bullied, and then you rise up and defeat the big bad bully.

Alternatively we could keep the theme and stretch it a little: A geek game. So you are part of the "nerdy geek group" at school, attracted to the fellow "geek girl" and go to board games club every friday after school. During lunch time there are random encounters say, or at least "one a turn" that would involve all of the perils of school "Tuck your shirt in!" from a head teacher would give you a "confidence" resource penalty, alternatively a Battlestar Galactica style event to overcome. Eg you must pay 2 red and 3 blue worth of cards to conquer the challenge otherwise you must do the failure option on the card (bringing you closer and closer to dropping out of school, or having to repeat the year or something) and of course there would be the incessant "bully assaults" that you would have to deal with (with or without help from the rest of your geek nerd team) special cards could help you negate certain cards or combat situations easie: "Chewing Gum: Use to distract one bully attack from another geek group member or seal any one door in the school shut" or "Gym Kit: Any gym-related quest card needs 3 less colours worth of cards to succeed" or "Fountain Pen: Shower a bully in ink; remove him from the game and you are placed in the "principals office" from the game for 2 turns while the teachers deal with you - gain 1 Bad Report token"

Hey cool, there could be other ways to lose as well: Report Tokens reaching 10 would have a letter sent home to your parents and you would lose the game.

The expansions could be different levels of school (UK system would be: Primary School, Secondary School, College, University) each taking place in a different environment with different challenges, "Peer pressures" and pit falls. Hehe - sounds fun, great idea moapy!

Lunch Money

Lunch Money has a schoolyard bully feel. It is from the description a game of Catholic Schoolgirls whooping each other's butts over lunch money. So I don't know if it goes in the "unexplored theme" category, unless we're strictly speaking if board games as this is exclusively card driven.

Has anyone done a game involving International Currency Trade? We had a work friend ask us that question and lay out his idea of how we could make a game of worldwide currency speculation. I've kept ahold of the idea in the back of my head for months now and it hasn't gone away for some reason.

I think the bully theme is

I think the bully theme is really cool, and has a lot of different game options. But as for unexplored game idea I have no idea on that one.

I do have another idea though, sticking with the school theme. Perhaps a competing school idea, each player controls a high school in the same state/province, and the players are competing for higher test scores, sports team success etc. Players could do certain actions during their turns, firing key teachers, removing certain programs, or increasing budgets in certain school activities. Certain cards could remain in play such as star athletes or specialty teachers that get swapped between players, by firing and hiring, or possibly bad kids that you can expel and send to other schools. Could be somewhat interesting, although could make some players relive bad memories, hehehe.

Nice, I like the education

Nice, I like the education themes stuff!

I have asked the same question (but modified, so as not to anger the trolls) in board game geek forums, check out some of the cool ideas that people have:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/690205/what-are-some-unexplored-game-themes

I have written all of the good ideas at the top in the post. You will have to ignore the first 6 responses involving: "Cactus farming ninja llama assasins" ... *sigh*

It's always a double-edged sword going over there ¬_¬
