PnP Idea and question

This whole idea was actually inspired by a site that has a full listing of magic the gathering cards but also has an option to mix and match cards on a sheet for printing proxies. Do you guys think that'd be a viable option for a PnP format. I'm planning on doing something like that when we get to the stage in which we start doing external/blind playtests.

Pros:

  • It gives playtesters a chance to experiment with a deck that fits them.
  • It can later be used as a way to draw new players in by letting them test combos before buying.

Cons:
People may consider just printing the cards rather than buying them from us.

That's all I can think of. Thoughts?

For one LCG of mine, I was

For one LCG of mine, I was thinking to first release it as free PNP and then as print on demand while still being available as free Pnp.

Other Pro:

- Game gets playtested more intensively. Very important for CCG which is hard to achieve true balance.

- More people play your game, another important pro, because in the world of CCG, people do not play games out of the box, they will only play if they can have their own cards. By distributing them freely, you increase the population of players. Many CCG died because you could not find enough players in a certain area.

Finally, approximately only 6% of gamers are willing to print and play their own game. Which leaves you 94% of other gamers who simply want to buy the cards.

Considering that CCG is a very risky market that only big companies can afford, releasing your game for free while selling cards at the same time could be a solution for smaller CCG to work. Not sure if other games has currently followed this path so far.

Exactly

And as I was saying before it can even be used to draw in new players because I know from personal experience having a very limited personal budget that its always good to have a resource available to print proxies to test first if I like how they work together and also if I really want to pay for it.
