Hello Designers,

it would be awesome if you could take a look at the latest version of the rules for my skirmish combat game (name still in progress ;)).

Here you go (google.docs):
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sWLOfBdUf2BhUh6q2pyLT7eo-q_doD_McRrb...

Feel free to comment in the document or here!

Note that the layout is not final (as I'll convert the file to word to finalize anyways) and that I'll still need to replace some of the older pictures. Some of the colored text will be in boxes, and I will find ways to reduce the page count, too.
The most important aspects for me would be if the grammar is correct and if you understand what I'm talking about ;)

The new website is on it's way, too - if you like to have a look and comment, it's here:

I already got some great advice here on the forums and I managed to integrate a lot in this final version - I think the game really improved with your help.

Happy gaming,

Chordcommander

TLDR - but...

I just wanted to check on the SIZE of your rulebook. Mine was 5"x8" and had 39 pages! With some commando editing and using a smaller font, I shrunk down the explanations to 20 pages (nearly half).

Yours is 33 pages and 8.5"x11"!!! You'll have to change the font, shrink the images (since there are many - and they take up quite a bit of space) and re-word things to be less verbose.

People told me 39 pages was too much - even if they were smaller. Yours are bigger - I can't expect any other reaction than - woah, you need to trim down to a more manageable size...

One thing I recommend, is you get a Graphic Designer to create you a "nice" header and footer for your document. It will add much professionalism to the over rulebook. You can maybe even come up with your own...

Anyways best of luck with your game!

Hey, thanks for the feedback.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I'll definitly need to reduce size, but as I wrote, this is the barely layoutet version, as I regularly work on it on my iPad and therefore prefere the bigger size of the font.
I think I can bring it down to 15-20 pages just by changing layout/font sizes. Additionally I could cut all arts, component overviews and examples (there are 3 examples that take up one page each) to reduce the size even more but I'm not sure if that is benecial. (I personally like, if the rulebook contains some art, and lots of examples, FAQ stuff and so on).
What do you think?

Like they say...

IF the artwork in your rulebook is "beneficial", I would keep it!

However if you reduce the FONT size, maybe you could put some effort and resize the images also. They don't all need to be 200% (if you know what I mean).

A FAQ is probably best put on a "website" - give people a REASON to visit your website. But in your rulebook you could put: "For an in-depth FAQ, please visit our website at: http:/..."

Examples are another point: you could have like 1 or 2 examples. And then state "For more Examples, please visit our website at: http:/..."

This is to help reduce the size of your rulebook and to increase traffic to your game's website (If you have one...)

Just some additional ideas!

I could bring the rules down

I could bring the rules down to 20 pages by just reducing font size and images. I think with final layouting (integrating images in the text etc.) I can cut 2 or 3 more pages.
Thanks for the input!
