Hi all,
I have developed a board game (Xulthul's Shadow; deviousweasel.com) and am looking into production. I believe that I will have enough capital to finance 1500-2500 units. I'd like your comments regarding my distribution plan.
As I intent to maintain my professional employment and am okay with a slow market penetration, my plan (based on a $12 production cost and Spring/Summer 2014 release date) is:
1. Internet sales using my own online store (to be set up), Amazon, eBay and Etsy
2. Local, in-state distribution to local game stores (charge $25-28 for a $49.99 retail price)
3. Seek representation by a distributor (such as ACD).
4. Operate a booth for exposure and direct sales at Gen Con 2014.
Any thoughts or advice?
Best,
Jim
Thanks for the comments.
Regarding costs, I have included shipping costs and such into the unit cost.
My question is really this: I have a professional career that I do not want to jeopardize, but I would like to get my game on the market and start designing the next one. I'm okay with small for a year or two.
I think my most viable options are (assuming 1000 - 1500 units):
1. Use my home office as my warehouse and ship directly to consumers, gathering sales by electronic media means
2. Get a distribution company to take care of distribution to game stores (for a cost) and supplement with web sales.
I'm happy to explore other options, and welcome all opinions, but these appear to be the most "doable" for a small start-up.
Best,
Jim
