I've long made art for my own games and even find creating images in photoshop a fun enjoyable pastime.
Yesterday, I was approached by another fellow indie designer to make some cover art for his new game.
Something new, working on someone else's game, but I gave it a go! The result was pretty good IMO. I earned a little pocket money but all in all I felt just as pleased as the client.

Good source :) Might be a good idea to start a How-To list on public-domain image sources!

Yes Rich...a mash up as you put it. Manipulation makes it sound more fancy though! Wikicommons mostly for stock images.
