Timer in terms of actual time
Are you looking for a timer mechanism that ticks down actual time, or time in the context of the game itself?
Or is this up to interpretation?

timer as component
Use a timer in your game. As a physical component in your game; not an abstract "time" theme. You can also include time in your theme, but definitely the use of a physical timing device.

Yep, absolutely - there's no restriction on the 'kind' of timer you use. In fact, I'm hoping that people don't think only of sand timers :)
