Howdy all,

Yesterday evening I stumbled across the Come Out & Play website:

http://www.comeoutandplay.org/2011/04/26/submit-to-the-2011-come-out-play-field-day/

What is Come Out & Play? From their website:

Quote:
This year Come Out & Play will be holding a Field Day of exciting new outdoor games on Governors Island in New York City on July 16. The Field Day is being run in partnership with the River to River Festival.

Located in New York harbor, a half mile from the southern tip of Manhattan, Governors Island boasts fields, bike paths, forts and complexes of old houses and barracks.

For the Field Day we will be looking for roughly 10-12 games outdoor games that can be played on Governors Island on July 16. Games can range from quick play social games to new sports to large-scale events. We will be grouping games together so players will be able to check out different games and try out as many different games as possible. Shorter and smaller games will be expected to run multiple times throughout the day to accommodate walk-up players.

All submissions are due by May 27.

We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis as they come in and letting designers know about acceptance as soon as possible.

As always we’re looking for new games that make interesting use of space and bring the fun outdoors.

The constraints:

Playable in public on Governors Island Must be able to run Saturday, July 16 About Come Out & Play

Come Out & Play provides a forum for new types of street, mobile and location-based games. We bring together players eager to explore the world around them, with designers interested in producing innovative new games and experiences. Oh yeah, and we have city-sized fun.

I've designed a few active outdoor games, and I figured that some of you would be likely to have done so also. That's why I'm sharing this with y'all here.

If I am interpreting this correctly it means you must not only create a game but be there to run it for them.

Correct

Come Out & Play is an opportunity for designers of (primarily) street games to run their games. There are trophies given out to designers in certain categories at the end of the event based upon voting by members of the organizing committee. But, otherwise, it is more about enjoying one of a kind structured activities than implementation of a formal ruleset. If last year's event was a true indicator, the vibe is very personal and open with an emphasis on experimentation and imagination. Although many of the designers will playtest their games beforehand, a good deal of it is meant to be sui generis, performed only once. So, it is hard to imagine a game being run by anyone other than the designer.

It's possible that they want the designer there to run the game – I really hadn't considered it since the game I was considering submitting is a very simple to learn variant of tag.

Given what rcjames said, I strongly suspect that they do want the designer(s) there.

Well, shucks.
