(Don't know if this is the right forum category)

This might sound like an ad, but I just had to post it:

The famous board-game of my childhood, HeroQuest returns after 30 years. My inner child is so happy right now!

Information on the topic is still sparse but it looks very much like it will be a real board-game and not an app. The art and the logo also looks very traditional to me, so lets hope for the best!

PAX Unplugged Memory

I still remember, several years ago, when I attended PAX Unplugged. The Dice Tower was having a panel discussion on what games they would like to see remade.

Tom Vasel announced his number one choice was HeroQuest, and I instantly hooted out my enthusiastic agreement: "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Almost as instantly, I thought to myself, "...Why am I the only one excited?"

It's good to see that I'm not the only one stoked about seeing a reissue (?) of an unforgettable part of my youth.

Miss Die

...And it's nice to see that they changed the "miss" die face to something that less-resembles a demon bunny face. :)

I sold my copy a few years

I sold my copy a few years ago for 90 CAD because I never had a chance to play, even in my youth, I rarely had more than 1 player. Dungeon and dragons always got more priority than HeroQuest

I would be more looking for solo dungeon crawler now, but those kind of games seems more suitable as video game.

Else what I really like about this game is the furniture. I like modelling scene, to a point where I though of making a dungeon interior designer game where you need to create a functional and esthetics design. Like designing a torture room that is efficient to use, but also good to look at.

So the main reason why I kept the game was for painting mini and furniture.

I hope they changed some rules to fix the many issues this game had. They could also use a mansion of madness style of game app as a game master.

It seems that the 25th anniversary kick starter failed after all.

Hasbro/Avalon Hill will

Hasbro/Avalon Hill will officially announce the new HeroQuest in a bout 8 hours.

We have a lot of discussions going on on Discord: Is the new game true to the original or is it a "Betrayal at..." Clone, a totally different concept, or even a App?

@larienna: The people behind the kickstarter did not have the rights for a new HeroQuest. But, what we are about to get now, is the real thing.

us$99 for the game, us$120 for shipping to Canada .. wtf?

What irks me ...

Is that they HAVE their "own" crowdfunding platform! Like why didn't they simply use Kickstarter like the rest of us. I guess they wanted to keep the small percentage that KS keeps. It's probably around 3% to 5% only because of Credit Card processing fees which are about 5%.

Weird. Yeah $99 USD is reasonable, but $120 USD to ship to Canada... And no shipping to Quebec... WTF is that about?!?! Seriously!

...Well, HeroQuest has been re-released. So, I guess this is what I asked for...?

I shouldn't throw shade. Really. I wish them the best of success on this campaign.

An observation

With games like Gloomhaven and Frosthaven making over $1,000,000+ USD and a bunch of other similar miniature-based games on Kickstarter from CMON or Mantic Games ... "HeroQuest" (HQ) is not so much the UNIQUE product that it used to be. Previously when the game was originally released, there were no OTHER minis games that involved questing and miniatures. But today, there are a bunch of ALTERNATIVES which are all real nice and impressive too.

So even if you WANT to pick-up your copy of HQ ... know that there are alternatives to this miniature-based game nowadays!

Note #1: I mentioned Frosthaven because here are the KS stats (backers & dollars) = 83,193 backers pledged $12,969,608 USD. That game made almost $13M! Oh Wow. It was sold for $100 USD + Shipping. To Canada the shipping was $28 USD. So something is seriously wrong with the HQ crowdfunding campaign (and shipping).

Kickstarter takes a flat 5% off the top. Credit card fees are separate and around 4-5%.

By having their own crowdfunding platform (which they've had since 2012) they cut out that 5% kickstarter fee. On $1million, that's $50,000 .. that's a big chunk of change, even for a company like Hasbro.

Plus, they don't need the Kickstarter exposure phenomenon. They have enough exposure and advertising to get out there.

As for their shipping, yes, they have seriously dropped the ball there. Even using FedEx as they are, there is no way it costs that much to ship, even without a high volume shipping account!

I have a feeling this reprint will not go to regular distribution/retail channels and they're doing a direct to consumer.

Hasbro can do better. Way better.

I agree. I speculate they could consider an afterthought for retail, certainly after the holiday season (though there's no telling when production and then shipping would be completed on this, even from Hasbro).

I wondered if it would be worth going to my FLGS and asking them if they planned to carry it so I could support them by purchasing a copy. ...But I didn't want to risk aggravating him by bringing up the subject.

Why would you asking for a game from your FLGS ...

"Aggravate" him??? Meaning all the good games are being released ONLINE even with companies like Hasbro!!! You think the FLGS owner will be upset that yet another popular game title is being marketed DIRECTLY to the consumer bypassing the FLGS and/or Brick & Mortar stores?!

Like I said, the shipping is INSANE ... The game is relatively priced in the correct range. So maybe they MIGHT release the game in-stores some time in the future. I mean that's the real game.

Look at Scythe sold originally 50,000 copies in-stores. Now with International sales, that game is over 300,000 copies sold globally. And now Stonemaier Games doesn't Kickstart their games anymore... Direct to Distribution and on to FLGS and/or Brick & Mortar stores!

Well the shipping is insane

Well the shipping is insane indeed and a possible overseas shipping wont be anything short of that.

They told me that another company holds the EU rights so they are not allowed to sell it there (lame excuse if you ask me).

Im pretty much disappointed anyway now, the art is gorgeous, as is the board, the cards and most of the miniatures. On the other hand it is "just" a exact (1:1) re-creation of the old HeroQuest. There is nothing updated to 2020 in terms of mechanics or rules, or content.

To sum it up: by then, the buzz (and thus, the influx of sales) will be gone. That's what will make him upset.

But what does Hasbro care? They have Walmart and Target.

I wonder if they changed any rules or redesigned the quests? The miniatures are awesome. The game is very expansive, I can still not expect the 40$ it cost when I was a kind.

If the game is intended for kinds, there must be a french translation, else it connot be sold in quebec. I think that is the rules, because many adults game can still be published here without a french version.

There was similar issues with hero scape.

At your mention of it, I checked this out and bought it on a lark - for PC, though.

I've had some fun with it so far...! I'm curious to see how the entire campaign shapes up and whether the editor provides lots of fun opportunities.

There is an editor!?

Now that my GF bough gamepass for almost 3 years, and that I am busy with school. I have way too many games to play even if limited by my fighting stick as input device.

So I don't intend to buy games anytime soon unless there is a major sale. Fun to know if the game is good.

...

It is currently on sale, but it more expansive on Xbox than PC. I imagine it plays better with a mouse than a fighting stick.

So, already lost interest on

So, already lost interest on the HQ revival by AvalonHill/Hasbro

Why? Because, well it's nice but not as cool as I expected it. Then there is no international shipment. And finally, it looks like a huge money grab to me now.

1.5 M stretch goal? I've seen much smaller companies dealing with way smaller kickstarters and producing way better games.

Sorry but they lost me...

I sailed away on the same boat you did, it seems.

Two other points:

  • I revisited Bardic Broadcast's review of why Hero Quest Is The Greatest Game Ever and realized that he came up with the "bunny dice" thing long before I did. What a guy. :)
  • He also did a video where he speculates about what will be revealed when that Hero Quest timer ended. How much do you think he had correct?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aOCzMIbiQQ

He brought up a great point regarding HQ being "a game for its time." How it was a game that sparked the interest of the target market - typical boys round the age of 10 - in sword and sorcery. He points out how the cover art was the "touchstone" for the tone, feel, and theme of the game. He ends his review with a mellow summary that, upon the unveiling he'll learn that this remastered game might not be for him.

I think quite firmly that I'm in that camp. Though it has the same name, and many of the same ingredients, it's altogether a very different dish (my issues with the sales technique notwithstanding). You're either in the car, or you're throwing rocks at it.

Any other thoughts on this?

Shows once again how much impact the theme/art-style has on the final product.

Smaller companies do because they are dealing in small quantities.
Hasbro is not going to bother making something if it's not going to be sold in a certain minimum quantity that is insanely larger than any other game publisher because they're a corporation that deals in high volume, mass market.

That said, I've been pretty *meh* on Heroquest forever, so I was never likely to preorder this new release myself anyway.

At least they dropped the shipping to Canada from us$120-135 down to us$25-30.
That's .. something.

I think Fhizban's thread gave them like $500k worth of sales!

Jay103 wrote:

It's all this discussion about HeroQuest that has got all kinds of people interested in the game. My bet is that we made them a cool $500,000 USD worth of sales, just by discussing the game here and linking URLs/Links.

(Just a bit of sarcasm folks... People sure do LOVE miniatures!)

Hah ... Now I'm betting you're thinking about picking up a couple copies!!! Just kidding. I can't even BUY it because they don't SHIP to Quebec.

Not that it really matters... But anyhow it's nice to know people like to discriminate against us peeps in Quebec!
