I'm proud of how our members behave (A mild rant in disguise).

Hi All,

I'm proud of how we, as a community, treat spammy messages that appear on the forum.

That is: We ignore them.

That said, there's a recent one that comes so close to actually being relevant to the forum. I wrote a comment for it because I wanted to explain the value of things like paragraph breaks and tone of voice, and how he could use these to deliver his message better.

Then I took a deep breath and deleted my post-to-be. Bad behavior does not deserve attention, and the odds of the poster ever coming back to check on the status of the post is minimal.

It was so hard to do. So I'm writing this post instead.

Thanks for listening.

Jonathan

I came very close to removing that offending thread. However, I left it on because it actually does hint at a valid design discussion topic.

Assuming it was simply a drive-by spamming, then having it die a quietly ignored death is okay by me.

Market....

I'm sure the market has dictated why this is the case.

Bad ideas hang out in awful forum threads all the time.

It is really frustrating to watch the spammers adding their rubbish when logged on at the same time.

can they be blocked brykovian? or has it become another task on your list of things to do.

Various spammers are usually blocked by an admin, (and actually have been the last few mornings).

Howerver, the current thread in question is riding a fine line.

The core of the post does have some merit with respect to design. That being designing of a game that targets or involves accessibility issues (beyond the mere color blindness aspect that is often covered here at BGDF).

At this time I think the admin (or at least I) have decided to *let this post slide* assuming the user does not use it purely as a means to self promote. If useful and meaning design discussions arise from this topic, it is a benefit to all of us. IF this turns into purely a user that means to self promote, the account will eventually be blocked.

Zzzzz is the master as to what this new site system can and cannot do ... so, I'm unsure of whether there can be preventative tricks put in place to pre-block spammers. Zzzzz's list is long and his time is short. ;) Personally, I'd rather see him work on a game design. :-D

The mass-admin screens are pretty capable to do quick clean-up after-the-fact. So, that's our route at the moment.

A big Thank You to the admins...

A lot of the replies actually bring up something I forgot to mention:

A big "thank you" to the admins for all the work they do to keep the site running. I'm a big fan of the BGDF, and appreciate that it endures, despite the attempts to hack it, the spammers and para-spammers, and so on. Y'all rock the casbah!

Thanks so much,

Jonathan

I also immediately delete any

I also immediately delete any WOW gold threads, etc., that I find (though Zzzzz and others usually manage to get to them before I do!), and was similarly torn on this one.

You never know...

You never know....

That thread may show up as a design challenge somewhere down the road.

This thread too! Think of it "Spamming" by Hasbro.

Just kidding, or am I?

I too am grateful for the hard work spent on keeping this site running and thank all those involved.

That's the kicker...

That's the kicker: The message at the core – Make games for an under-served and deserving market – is a good message, and a good challenge. It's very worthy of effort.

It's worth considering, but the spammer seems to be telling us that nothing else is worthy of doing, which is pretty ridiculous.

That's the sad part of it. There's a good message in there, but any appeal it may have gets lost by the presentation. It's awfully hard to win over your audience if you call them ignorant.

Like I said at the first post... I wanted to help, but I think the poster is long-gone and I didn't want to reinforce bad behavior.

On the up-side, I've gotten to vent a tiny bit, we've voiced appreciation for the admins, and we're on the verge of discussing development of games for differently-abled kids and adults.
