Hello.

I randomly found this website whilst looking through google to see if anyone had done a good job of making a Command and Conquer-esque board game and thought the site looked like the kind of thing I should register and get involved at. I am your typical frustrated creative type who has a billion started projects of varying types under his belt and nothing ever gets finished. I am hoping there are other people out there who are like me. :)

Whilst I probably won't ever finish a home made game, I think it will be nice to hang around here and see some talented people making some talented designs, so Hi, I'm Dannage, based in Essex, UK and I like playing games.

If there isn't a proper forum topic for newbies to say hi, then any new people please consider this thread one where you can also say hello to the community at large. :D

Hey there, Dannage, and welcome. I certainly could have used such a newbies board a couple of weeks back. I found the best way to get your name out there is to start spamming :)

I found this website by googling board game design, I'm a Canadian exchange student in Belgium and I don't have much chance to engage in my normal boardgame habit here. I really like the idea of a monthly contest but unfortunately missed this month's. Nice to be here hope to see you around.

Another newbie chimes in!

Hello!
I too am new to BGDF and wanted to say greetings. I'm still in the process of reading old threads, but this site has been extremley helpful!

We currently are playtesting a 2-player sci-fi/horror board game, so I will probably be posting questions to the community soon!

Anyway, just wanted to say hello, and I'm glad I found this site!!!

I never knew there would be

I never knew there would be so many people waiting to say Hi. Perhaps the mods could take this as a sign to create a thread in a general discussion category or something and sticky it, so people know where they can start? :)

Hi from France

Hi !
Even if I said a shy little hi when posting my first lines about my work-in-progress, this is the opportunity to do it properly !
I'm living in France ( south ) and I'm into music, graphic design and now obviously into gaming ^^
I started my own game project a year or so, it's called Insania Lupina... I like to learn new things in almost every field and I'm currentely also a little involved in some other game projects with another member of this forum...

Welcome! :)

Welcome to BGDF all you new people!. This is a great forum and I'm sure you'll like it here.
I've often become lost in "BGDF World" by reading all the interesting posts. I especially like all the interesting techniques for making nice looking prototypes. The advice here is invaluable.

Enjoy!

Anyone else out there who has lurked for a while and not been bold enough to say hi, or there just hasn't been an appropriate opportunity, then step up and speak thy name!

Hiding for months (kinda)

Hey all, (my name's Clay)
I've chimed in once or twice on a couple threads here and there but mostly I just absorb all the crazy ideas from my little hidie-hole up here in Seattle :)
Since everybody is saying hi though I'd hate to be rude and ignore a call of camaraderie.
I found this place when googling prototyping techniques and have been stopping by to marvel at all the "sharing and caring" that goes on in this place. I know that's a stupid hippie thing to say but it's true!!
Anyway, the game I've created is called Galactic Gladiators (working title) and it's a blend of Stratego, M:TG, and Chess. Gonna have to stop being a wuss SOON and post the rules here as i"m in the need for blind playtesters.
Speaking of games(?), if Sedjtroll is reading this I COMPLETELY understand if my GDS submission came in to late (i think i pm-ed him at like 11:45pm) no worries at all:)
oh, Dannage, thanks for being the bold one!!

Joined recently myself as well. Though I had been looking at the site consistantly several months before I registered and had seen it in the past. Growing up I did a lot of custom game cards and used to design game ideas (though no real rules) and recently decided to look into it more seriously and have been reading and trying to pick things up.

Great place to learn and practice. Glad I found it.

Hello from another newbie!

Hello all. I am also new here, hailing from North Carolina (originally Ohio though).
I came across the site just a couple of weeks ago, and registered last week. I am a big lover of games, and game design. I believe the path I took to get here began when I was looking at some print and play games such as Zombie in My Pocket, I came across Jack Darwids Island of D games, and from there I think a BGG link brought me here.

I am actually surprised that I hadn't found this site earlier. I have been enjoying Looney Labs games for quite some time, including their (newly renamed) Looney Pyramid games. I have designed a couple of those games myself. I have also been working on and off on a couple of my own card games. Probably never for professional publishing, but possibly for a print-and-play style release. I will probably talk about those ideas at some later time though.

In the meantime, hello all. And thanks for making a fellow fell so welcomed!

I'm also quite new here. I

I'm also quite new here. I made many a board game in high school but have kinda fallen out of it since then. I just recently began working on a trading game that involves a copious amount of custom dice. I was searching around for dice game mechanics and the February showdown showed up. Being in my third year of collage I've had little free time, but what time I do have I've been spending on this game. I am not likely to post here often as classes have been time consuming, but I will eventually get around to posting my game once it has been play tested a few times

Happy to be here

Hey everyone.

Tonight's my first night, Just wanted to introduce myself.

My name's Ryan I work at Kansas State University as a missionary, and I'm working with a number of the gamers there to try to create a came for social good (in sort of the Jane McGonical vein)

We want to eventually get up to pretty high complexity but it seems to make sense to start simple, and start analog, learning the mechanics of game . I've made a simple card game already, i have a vision for 2 more increasingly complex games the simple one of which is sci fi parody, and the complicated one being a real world simulator.

I'm just looking for some help avoiding common pitfalls and a new set of eyes to add creative energy to the process.

Step one for me was to make a simple card game (that one is done)

Step two is to work towards the SciFi vision, which I think needs to be done by making a simpler core game first, and then adding complexity like an expansion pack

So I wrote up the beginnings of a concept for a fantasy Game (without all that interstellar warfare) that I would love to have allyall's input on. Look for my post up in Game Concepts

Welcome to you Mr. Ryan, Well

Welcome to you Mr. Ryan,

Well you have come to the right place, we would be happy to help you out. What I would suggest is also making a boardgamegeek account if you haven't already. Over there are LOTS of people with broad overviews to give you their two cents, in here are fewer people but tend to be more design oriented, both have their uses :)

1. I would suggest taking a look at the old "Best Advice in game design" thread that was borne from the guys here a long time ago and subsequently built on. Updated copy: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/693766 has some great advice to just "keep in mind" throughout all processes.

2. Make a game blog for your game, it helps to get subscribers, hype and keeps you on track. Either wordpress, blogger, or simply use the in-house feature here on bgdf :)

Hope I've helped, it's a pleasure to meet you

Best advice is ask for

Best advice is ask for playtesters:

1) Specifically by personal name
2) Start a "Play mai game plz?" thread on bgg

1) Make some friends on bgg or here then email them (modify template below as per)

Hey there Mr ____ , from reading your posts, you seem like a really genuine boardgame fan and I am really hoping you would appreciate this: I have a new game that is X and does Y based on a Q theme and looking at your profile it looks as if you may find it interesting? Is there anyway I can send you a beta prototype/you can download and play the rule set with your gaming group and let me if you like it? I would be happy to thank you on the rules manual if it gets published?
Thanks so much for reading this and I won't be offended if you are too busy or it is not your thing.
Kind regards, hope you are well
Me.

2) Click "create new thread" then title it "Looking for playtesters: GAMETITLE & a bit of the theme" you will get loads of people keen to help.

Hope I've helped you out buddy :)

I've been a lurker here on

I've been a lurker here on BGDF for quite some time and hadn't thought to introduce myself... I'm not typically rude or discourteous as such. :P

So, I'm Gary Paull Jr - one of four main parts that comprise OHMS Gaming. I'm a US Marine, currently studying business and law, and OHMS is one of my passions. Our first game, Wasteland, will hopefully do well (but we have a lot yet to learn) with a lot more hard work, the great support of the indie publisher & designer community, and some luck.

I'm very receptive of advice and constructive criticism... so hopefully BGDF, among other venues, will aid us in our progression and we will likewise be able to return the favor.

To everyone else here on the BGDF - May you all have the best of luck in all of your endeavors and thanks for being such a great community.

hey kids!

Small world, eh?!

As to getting playtesters - best bet is to take your prototype to the nearest Convention. Offer it up for an event. You provide a gaming experience for the Con attendees and they provide you with feedback. It's the perfect storm!

Your Buddy, Chester

Well my name is Sam and I

Well my name is Sam and I come from Southampton in the United Kingdom (right on the coast at the bottom).

I am a website designer/marketing dude by trade and I think board games are cool!

I love helping people out and getting the favor returned. I always tend to have better suggestions for other peoples stuff than my own though...:(

I am currently designing (with eveyones help) a cardgame that borrows the awesome post-apocalyptic retro-future 1920's pinup glam world from the Fallout series and combines it with Magic The Gathering style card interactions, simple Race for the Galaxy style mechanic icons and a positional puzzle element somewhat similar to Space Hulk: Death Angel. Players take the role of leader of a constantly changing and upgrading caravan of elements that range from steam engines, cloud burster rockets and Comely Engineer Babes. Awww Yeah. http://www.bgdf.com/node/5354

Need some ideas or mechanics? Always happy to try and help out :D

Newbie =)

Hello, I'm very new to these forums, a few days in fact. I stumbled across this site when I was looking for inspiration to my many game ideas, and since my board game interested friends rather play my attemps at games than to help discuss them I have gotten valuable input from readin through this forum :)

I have two current game ideas that I'm working on, one is a grid based progression driven zombie game and one is a smaller card game illustrating the dependency theory between western countries and southern countries.

I really like this forum and the creative environment and just reading thorugh ideas gives food for thougt=)
